As a blog that starts private advertisement for the first time, it is pretty normal to not have advertisers for some time and have empty ad slots in the first few months. I started private advertising on this blog about 4 months ago and ever since all I had was some lousy ‘Advertise Here’ buttons which are completely useless in the other sense. Please note, by Empty ad Slots I mean those ad slots which have not been purchased with money(the way it is supposed to be) yet. So after spending 3 months like that, here is what I did to benefit from the Empty Ad Slot:

Trade Banners

I just peeked into the Make Money Online Niche and saw some other new blogs which were at the same stage as me, so I just sent up this request to them to see if they wanted to exchange a banner while keeping the price of the banner in mind and providing equivalent exposure, we came to an agreement and hence in a way my ad slot was sold and I used that money to advertise somewhere else which overall proved beneficial for me.

Provide Banner in some other Form

For a limited time, in my case, I made a listing to sell 125×125 ads on my blog equivalent to the price of the banner in the form of Entrecard Credits. I did benefit in terms of entrecard credits as well as I sold ad slots, hence fulfilling both of my aims.

What’s the Benefit

At least 4 ad slots sold out, which gives a good impression to the visitor, that is, the website has some value. It helps sell more ad slots as well. The advertisement that I got in exchange will get me traffic, wide exposure and make my blog more famous. You might also gain more visitors as many small-scale advertisers might be checking almost every hour to see if their ad is looking alright. You may also develop friendship with other fellow bloggers which will help your blog expand to a wider horizon. As for providing banner in some other form, I also get entrecard credits for that, you can also purchase a sponsorship button on 3arn.net through entrecard’s market.

Summary: It is really good to try some of the methods above as they will help you and your blog in many ways other than the common advantage of just getting the money.

At this point, I’m only really using Entrecard. I like their interface.

I know I’m really wasting a lot of possible leads or possible conversions on my site, but my plate is too with school and work to devote the time it takes to get real ads going.

I usually just take off ad spots if they’re empty. Affiliate banners never seemed to do me any good.

Some good tips here. It’s important to make it look like people are advertising on your blog and that it’s popular so until you can get committed advertisers, it’s good to do swaps that will benefit both parties.

I will normally either take them down to distract the readers less or just use a few affiliate banners

I wouldn’t call it distracting the readers, because as for those blogs which have dozens of completely useless widgets, I don’t think that this will be distraction!

Some people also decide to put google adsense in those empty spaces. This is also a good way of making your website work for you (or just pay for itself). I think that the difference in revenue as compared to ads purchased beforehand with money is minimal.

Personally, I’m very much against Google Adsense because it clearly exploits it’s publishers. First it gives them low returns on clicks and when he makes some money, they cancel his account for no reason!

Do you think that too many ad slots looks tacky?

Also, do you think they decrease the value of the ads themselves, being tucked away in a pile of other similar looking ads.

Wouldn’t there be better value in selling 4 slots at $50 each than 10 slots at $10 each?
