I took the time to check out bing for the first time yesterday. While I’ll admit I have a hard time giving bing a shot because I am so used to Google for all my searching I’m going to proactively use it more for testing purposes to see what I think. however that being said I really think the future is going to be Twitter search because that brings something unique to the table. Not just the real time “what’s happening right now” search but there is alsol a human element that is not present with the other search engines Twitter search FTW! :)

I totally agree with you on the point that Twitter will be used for searching but there is one thing. 140 characters tweets can not fulfill all searching needs. Do you think it will be suitable for people who want to do research on a topic? The only plus point for twitter is that it displays real-time results. Fresh news, tells you what’s going on. It can be easily used for spamming, etc.

    @Abdulrehman Agha,

Well again we come back to the “human element” that is not present in Google, Bing or any other search engine.

When you do a query and find something that seems relevant you can actualy engage a live human being and further your research by talking to someone that has first hand knowledge of the topic at hand.

Also regarding teh 140 characters of course you aren’t gong to find all the information that you are looking for in 140 character and this is why many/most tweet use links to expand on the information. Just like Google itself does not provide all the iformation they index all of the site that are on the world wide web and provide a link to the website that has more information. Twitter provides relevant links in the same way.

This is like saying … Well google doesn’t provide all the necessary informaion in the description under the link. But whenl you click through you are visiting a website that does provide the information you are looking. Well twitter povides the link to the website but again provides a social/human element that is not present in search engines.

and yes the “real time” search is also something search engines currently do not offer.

  2. ‘Net user since 1992 or so on a shell account. So I know a thing or two about change. I’ve been a dedicated Google-r since the very start of Google. I remember various Gopher indexes, then this fancy thing called Yahoo, Excite.com’s review index, the original CSOTD (cool site of the day), AltaVista when it was cool, Hotbot and Lycos before each got bought, etc etc… Each came and went.

So while I have a hard time imagining myself leaving Google, it has happened before and shall certainly happen again. While I’m not sure if Bing is the next Big Thing (does big actually STAND for Big thING?), it certainly does seem to have some merits and I might try it out for a bit.

I have used bing for quite a while mainly for testing purpose as my mind is preset that it will not as good as google. Actually it has certain positive features which is quite good but still not as good as google. I do not think a strong reason to shift from google.
One thing I have noticed in Bing is their local search engine is quite good. But maybe to filter spams they have given priority to the established authority sites which means finding new sites will be even harder than google. I think twitter fill the gap for fresh sites, if you spend some time on twitter you will come up with many new sites which can be said “super fresh sites”.

  4. I use Google almost reflexively, but thanks to your thoughtful review you’ve convinced me to gice Bing a try.

  5. Henrik says:

I found it funny that you couldn’t find the contact form to help Google.
A quick Google search gave me a site with a list of places where I could contact Google. So if I want general help with Google, I just use help@google.com.

Who could have thought that a Google search would give me the email to Google? 8)

    Abdulrehman Agha Reply:

It wasn’t the same back then. They might have introduced it now because I remember around a year ago I had to go to the extent of literally contacting google employees and asking them to help me but still had no luck. It’s good that they’ve finally come up with an effective support system.

  6. I read about the news of Bing last week too, I’ve tried to search the keyword and I found that my blog doesn’t appear in lots of pages. Since it’s built from live.com, I believe that the algorithm also same to live.com. I think not much people use Bing as their main search engine now, so I don’t think we could get more traffics from there. But, I still received little traffic from Bing this 2 days. :)

They only have the same cache of old pages from Live Search. Their algorithm is totally revamped. you have no idea how cool it can be. It has great perspectives for marketers.

I might be writing a post on somewhere next week on how to optimize for Bing. The fact is, my website isn’t so optimized for Bing either and I have to do so, some pages are optimized and I get around 15 hits from it daily. If you want to know whether your website is in it’s index or not, just do a “site:” search!

I tried it and find that I’m using it it often. It’s faster and it’s searches are more relevant.
I hope people give it a try. The best thing about it is that the Bing vs. Google competition is proving better for us, so let them go at it!
