The Compete Ranking Literally Sucks!

Written by Abdulrehman on November 19th, 2009

I usually like doing a little talk on these ranking websites such as Alexa and Compete. I used to think that Alexa ranking was worthless but also agreed that it is the only ranking measure that is accurate to some extent in our set of internet marketing tools.

Around a year ago someone told me about compete and how it was very accurate when it came to ranking as compared to Alexa. I was convinced because it was accurate as of my visitor statistics according to then.

I used to get around 6000 unique visitors back then and it should near 4500 people coming to my website. I lost track of the compete rankings ever since and decided to focus more on getting traffic rather then checking statistics again and again.

Just happened to have a look at it again a few days ago and I was astonished to read the figure. As of now, my website gets 13000 + unique visitors a month and instead of increasing the number of people to my website, Compete decided to reduce it to 1300.

This just proves how inaccurate these ranking websites are. I still doubt Alexa’s accuracy. In fact, it can’t be accurate, it’s common sense. But in the long term it follows my blog’s traffic pattern which shows that it gets a hint of the traffic using whatever way it is.

However, compete doesn’t have a clue about these things. My alexa ranking is in the range of 160,000 and the compete ranking is near 700,000. The difference between the two might be the inaccuracy of the websites or maybe just the noob-ness of Compete (Is there really a word noob-ness? :-D )

Along with my usual rants, just wanted to let other people who have a website or blog that: Compete and Alexa both are inaccurate but out of the two Compete is more inaccurate. I just compared the results of 3arn.Net here but I actually noticed this on several other website of mine as well. Leave you with the golden quote:

Don’t give a tweet about ranking websites. If you’re into making money on the internet, third-party statistics don’t matter a bit.

Never used the compete ranking before. I like the Alexa.

  2. Partly agree with you. Usually compete sux, but sometimes it’s accuracy is quite good. I think it depends on website and other external factors. I guess they look at pagerank and at alexa rank. I believe that alexa does the same - pagerank and compete

Ha well I know that these rankings are always inaccurate, but still Alexa is still popular among bloggers and advertisers. And it’s always fun to check some stats out every now and then.

No rankings is really that accurate, but we can use them as basis.

  4. First off, thats a great quote at the end. Checking statistics is generally a waste of time, and you are right in saying that it doesn’t matter in comparison to the money you are making online. It is easy to get addicted to ranking sites and begin to believe that they are a reliable source as to how your website is doing. You are better off working on getting visitors and conversions, then spending time trying to boost your statistics.

Compete can be pretty inaccurate. It isn’t a good measurement of your traffic. Alexa is better but it is also inaccurate because it requires the Alexa tool bar which not many people have.

  9. I really do not pay attention to alexa or compete but if you are selling advertising on your website or blog then you need to find ways to increase your alexa ratings. The higher your alexa rating the higher you can charge for advertising spots on your site.

Exactly, its the traffic that the alexa is measuring, so the nicer the alexa ranking means, you have higher incoming traffic.

I always used alexa.com for rankings until I sold ads. There I encountered compete ranking and was shock that my ranking there was far from what my alexa rank is. Right now I included the compete rank code on my website and I’m waiting for results if it’ll increase.

I have checked some sites that I personally know and also a few sites of my own which obviously I know the exact data for.

Compete is utter crap. It is simply a joke.

Alexa may not be accurate but it still can give you a good impression as to your site’s standing.

Compete is simply a broken toy. Literally useless.

Sorry to sound negative but when something needs to said, it needs to be said.

You’re right. Compete has no use, it is far behind Alexa in web traffic ranking at the moment. I think it needs MUCH more compete toolbar users before it starts getting any data that makes some sense, right now what we see is just the result of a hand picked users that are causing the rankings. Don’t worry, you’re not sounding negative and I agree that it needed to be said.

  14. Couldn’t agree more about compete. Why is compete even around still? Completely useless.
Alexa is quite accurate according to my statistics too, it’s a good indicator for how close or distant your google top 10 ranking is.
