Yea, that and it boosts the poster’s reputation. If I can say I have 5,000 subscribers, people will say “oh, he’s a big deal, I should see what he does and mimic him!”

It helps to boost your legitimacy, even if you’re doing it illegitimately.

  • O and I agree with you fully that it CAN be faked. You know that, I know that. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t people out there who will be swayed by it.
  • I hear you. That’s a big problem with a lot of contests is that it’s essentially fake visitors and fake subscriptions. The people don’t care about the thing they’re viewing, they just want the prize.

Still, having more subscribers to your blog is better than fewer as it’s potential returning visitors. I just wouldn’t get caught up in it as you said.

  • Provide Content, not your Affiliate Campaigns!
Again, it’s all a delicate balance. You want to make money on the web, but forcing products down a reader’s throat is not the best way to do it. Some people get overly agressive trying to sell affiliate products and it’s not worth reading. They won’t build a user base and so, they won’t make the money they’re trying to make.

It’s all about finding the balance between making sales and building a readership

  • Has Live Search Lost It’s Market Share?
So I thought it would be interesting to look at my results from the different search engines. Here’s my numbers for March so far:

    google (organic) 13,696 51.31%
    yahoo (organic) 7,042 26.38%
    msn (organic) 335 1.26%

As you can see from this, MSN is almost inconsequential. It’s roughly 1/50 of Google’s results, whereas Yahoo is 1/2. Show’s how limited MSN’s performance is.

  • Has Live Search Lost It’s Market Share?
That’s where the question arises. CAN somebody take back some of Google’s marketshare? Is it even possible?
  • Has Live Search Lost It’s Market Share?
I have a feeling Live Search gets minimal amounts of traffic. I’ve noticed that I almost get no traffic from it even though my rankings would be similar to what they are on google. I’ll try and find my actual numbers later to post similar comparisons
  • Be Yourself - Stop Copying
There used to be a service that you could use where you could enter your site and it would crawl the web looking for duplicate content to that found on your pages. I unfortunately don’t remember what the site was anymore, but it made it a lot easier to find when people were copying the things you wrote.

There are far more better things to obtain out of a contest and it is understood that most people use it for increasing feed readers, I mean you can blast you traffic and backlinks through a contest!

Good list man! Never tried Netvibes before. I understand that process can be easily automated

Its never really ethical to do the things you mentioned above but I think its because of “human psychology”. Most people are tempted to subscribe just because a lot of people are following that blog.. just my 2 cents

Dude, Like I said there are 5 ways mentioned above which are being used to fake the count. Now, if faking increasing your legitimacy(I’m confused)! :?:

did just publish a comment or what?

In the make money online niche, advertisers would pay you more if you have a high feed count.

  6. Great post! I never really thought that some of those feed counts could be faked like that…. who would take the time to go through all that just to show a good number?
But I’m guessing that there are a few that would!
I don’t pay much attention to it. For me, it’s the people who actually comment and participate on my blog that count the most.

  7. It is true that feed counts can be faked and how many subscribers someone claims to have does not change whether their blog is worth your time or not. It is never wise to do something that can be so easily revealed as fake as it will affect your reputation.

It is a good idea to offer an RSS feed for your blog though. Some people read blog posts almost exclusively in a reader or on an aggregation site such as FriendFeed. If you don’t offer full feeds of your posts you’ll miss out on some quality readers who will share and recommend your content for you.

When Louis Gray first started reading my blog he asked that I change my RSS feed to include entire posts. I immediately did so. When another reader asked for an email option I added that at his suggestion.

Just last night I recommended an exceptionally good site at FriendFeed and within minutes someone expressed disappointment that they didn’t have an RSS feed. You DO want to reach your readers wherever they choose to be.

  8. I really like your site, but this particular post just confused me a bit. thanks for the info anyways. I didnt know you could fake the feed count…..??

  9. I make it a point to not show the feed reader numbers on my sites. I also barely use my own RSS reader. I much prefer to surf to a site and read the content.
