Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Vs iPhone 3G

Written by Abdulrehman on October 20th, 2008

iPhone 3G, Apple’s most recent release of the iPhone series has met real competition recently with the new release from Nokia, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic code-named ‘Tube’. Now this is certainly not for Apple Fans because what I’m going to talk about is something that is not might not be in favor of iPhone.

Since it’s release, iPhone has created a new vision in the world of cell-phones. the whole touch system and the applications drove millions of people crazy. But now, things are a bit different. Unlike the golden times for Apple, now nokia 5800 has proved that iPhone is not the only one in the game. Probably that’s the reason I thought of writing this Nokia 5800 Vs iPhone comparison. Overall, I personally think that Nokia 5800 has been built to counter the growing influence of iPhone and also add all the features that were recommended by Apple users, which now gives them a better choice. So here is a comparison table with features that each phone either supports of does not support:

# Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Apple iPhone 3G
1 Nokia’s XpressMusic series has been widely famous for its great music quality, plus nokia has also pushed in a new online music store, plus any XpressMusicc phone comes in with a 1 year subscription to download unlimited songs (with DRM). Apple’s online music store, iTunes has been a major player for their music advance, but their music qualities and online integration have made them really popular in terms of music.
2 This cell phone comes in with a 3.2 Mega pixels camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and dual flash, this is quite enough for just a phone. The iPhone came in with just a 2 Megapixels camera and no Flash nor Carl Zeiss optics.
3 It claims up to 35 hours of Music, and it is overall better either for voice, data and standby (about 15 to 30% more) It has up to 24 hours of Music, and other technical specifications regarding the Battery life are below Nokia 5800.
4 It comes with a 8GB Micro SD Card, so this is definitely better because upgrading memory would be very cheap and easy. It comes in two forms, 8GB and 16GB internal. Although that is quite a lot but extending memory in any case is not possible.
5 It has a 3.2″ screen with a resolution of 640×360, which means a higher resolution on relatively not so big screen. It has a 3.5″ screen with a resolution of 480 x 320, which means a small resolution on a big screen, not very impressive.
6 It does not only offer finger touch but stylus and plectrum as well which gives us more choices on the Input method. It basically depends on personal taste as iPhone only offers finger touch as the input method.
7 Video Recording is another common feature of a Nokia mobile. In addition you can record videos with the standard Nokia application and make video calls, something not yet possible on the iPhone. Although the iPhone is capable of playing some video formats some services have to be installed whereas they come pre-installed in nokia 5800.
8 This is the best part, an unlocked Nokia 5800 XpressMusic costs $390 only, which is quite amazing compared to the features. Buying an iPhone involves some serious money, Since it is always bought with a contract, paying for the first month and then the cancellations fees and all, A single iPhone with all these costs included would cost you about $800, see the difference!

I think that the results are very clear leading to one result, that until iPhone makes another release with more features Nokia 5800 is to stay on top, not only because of the slick features but also because it gave birth to a whole new concept to all of the cellular companies like Nokia to keep up with the generation. So after reading the iPhone Vs Nokia 5800 comparison, you still with iPhone 3G, or have you made a little change of mind?

Well I had the same problem and I can happily tell you that it’s easy to fix it :) :)

How to Fix the Nokia 5800 “Expired Certificate” Installation Error:

    1) Backup all your messages, contacts, notes, calendar entries, etc. by using Nokia PC Suite.

    2) After you have the backup, you have to remove the MicroSD card. Do not remove the card directly when the phone is on, card and data can get corrupt. Follow these steps to remove MicroSD card-

    a) Press the power key, sroll down and select “Remove Memory Card” option.
    b) Press ‘YES’ when asked “Removing memory card will close all open applications. Remove anyway?”
    c) Shortly after, the “Remove Memory Card and press OK” message appears, the microSD is ready to be unplugged or removed now from the dedicated slot.

    3) Enter *#7370# code on your screen to restore the phone to Factory Default Settings. This will delete all your personal data.

    4) Next, you will be asked the phone lock code, if you have not changed this earlier, enter the default one which is 12345.

    5) The phone will reboot, select your country as “HONG KONG”. Some users reported the phone works fine even while selecting their correct country but for some only HONG KONG works. Its better to chose Hong Kong here for now, we can change it later.

    6) Power off the phone again and put back the Micro SD card in its slot.

    7) Restart the phone and Voila!! your Nokia 5800 is ready to install any signed application.

Hope the above steps makes you guys happy and finally get rid of this annoying certificate error. Cheers!!

Well iPhone can also be used by one hand unless you are not used to the phone.. lol…

    ekco Reply:

the thing is that apple themselves haven’t made very much use of the multi-touch feature apart from when zooming photos or websites. no multi-touch is available where it would really help, like selecting text to copy and paste, which is still not available 2 years after release, or other features that are unexplainable missing from the iphone..

with this in mind, i would say that since nokia has had and additional 2 years to study the very capable, robust (the iphone passed the 3 story drop test, and has even survived being run over by a cement truck) and good looking alpha male of touch-phones, they should have been able to make a WAY more impressive phone than the 5800, in terms of both features and looks.

  20. Prashant says:

Hey, I really like 5800 too. But I fear that it will lag since it has a 376 MHz processor vs iPhone’s 524 MHz processor. The reviewer should take the internal hardware in account too. Not so great comparison. Nothing written about their OS, accessories bundle, freedom to use any SIM with Nokia etc. POOR REVIEW.

    [Reply To This Comment]

    Abdulrehman Reply:

Well I take value of your criticism but unfortunately you are in the minority. Reviews are ‘mostly’ conducted with features in view, not their hardware. I hope I cleared the point.

    [Reply To This Comment]

    Prashant Reply:

Sorry for the harsh words, buddy. I think you took it emotionally.
Still, I would say that it’s not me who is in minority but it is you who really is.
When we talk about computers (mobiles too are portable computers), it is always necessary to take into account at least some basic internal hardware information like RAM or Processor or Internal Memory etc.
Mind you, these features (although you don’t call them features) are important for all those visible features. Fast processor ensures no lagging. Huge RAM ensures smooth multitasking. 3D chip makes playing 3D games a pleasure. Dedicated audio chip provides a hope of pumping some good music etc. etc. etc.
Hope you understand my point now.
However, we both are geeks and hence friends. So Cool Down.
    :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

    Abdulrehman Reply:

First off, I don’t take comments emotionally. After all, everyone has a freedom of thought and speech. I don’t respond to 80% of the comments on the blog but I thought this one needed one. I have enough to say to fill up a PDF file, but I’ll just summarize it: These are those features that people care about. There are more than 22 Comments before yours and I didn’t find anyone mention ‘hardware’ in specific. 376 MHZ is not less, we wont be sending a million applications using a cell phone. At the end of the day, it still is a cell phone. 8)

Although I appreciate your hardware knowledge, but I have a 3 months diploma in that field and hence I am familiar to things as big as the ram, to as many as the computer’s registers in internal components. Don’t mind this but I’m not a geek, check my picture in the about page and then let me know if I look or sound like one. I’m cooler than the other side of your pilow, so don’t worry!

    King Reply:

First, hats off to Prashant for noting such an immense blunder in your review. Second, I pity Abdul Rehman, for 2 things; He criticized Prashant’s comment after taking it too personally (which he denied, by the way) and then, I made a very similar comment to this one, and like a two-year-old, he deleted the comment. Very IM-mature man. Very immature.

You obviously took his comment way too seriously, and that doesn’t speak too well about your character.

And, about deleting comments, what happened to the statement you made in the above post: “…everyone has a freedom of thought and speech..”. Why say something like that and delete someone else’s thoughts? Sad…

You said; “… it still is a cellphone…”. These phones are not merely cellphones, you self-acclaimed expert. They’re sophisticated devices called smartphones. Smartphones are miniature laptops. It’s always helpful to know the configuration of these devices. It’s much like buying a car without knowing the engine capacity. You can’t call it unnecessary information.

376 mHz is not less when compared to historic (almost antique) handsets, but in today’s world is definitely a handicap with multi-tasking, and other added features. And another point: Isn’t a slower processor going to badly effect the 5800’s performance when running the other features (that were so well advertised) that the iPhone doesn’t have? Hence, making it an inferior product.

Please don’t think that a three-month diploma and reading some IT magazines are achievements enought to be sooo proud of. It’s not like it’s a PhD. Someone should show you the difference (with the help of a few pictures you can colour-in).

I stand by what Prashant said and respect to him for the view.
Also, he was naming devices as a form of stating examples. Unlike you, trying technical terms to sound more knowledgeable than you actually are..

You have enough to say to fill up a PDF file? Are you so desperate to sound knowledgeable?! A PDF file by itlself does not imply any length. It could contain anywhere from 1 to infinite characters, theoretically. So, another misinformed statement. Like I said, that diploma isn’t anything to be too proud of.

Another thing; your ignorant comment about the geek thing; a geek is person with technical knowledge in a particular field, usually computers. Nothing to do with appearance or speech. So, nothing to do with your picture…

You come of as someone a little too proud with themself.
I thought I should take you down a notch.

    Abdulrehman Agha Reply:

Thanks for writing a big comment. I don’t delete comments(you should’ve contacted me if your comment did not appear), Do you know more about me than me myself?! LMAO!(The geek thing). My bad I called them a cell-phone. I’m still laughing on the PDF point. The diploma acknowledgment was not to show that I’m an expert, instead to show that I’m not ignorant on the subject of hardwares. I never felt proud( :| ), and taking me down a notch? Thank you, come again (Like Apu in simpsons says)

    King Reply:

    Nice reply.
And nice touch with the apu quote.

On another note, I don’t know more about you than you do. It’s just that your writing mannerisms give away a lot about you. Most of it being egotistical and ignorant.

All the best with trying to sound smart. And carry on L(your)AO.

Nice sidestep on owning up to your mistake to Prashant..

The comparison is fair in parts and unfair in others. For example, the screen on the iPhone IS impressive! It is odd that you have commented in the negative! You also have neglected to mention that that the iPhone is leagues ahead in terms of touchscreen tech. You have stated it’s a matter of personal taste and yet the Nokia Tube is being billed as touch screen. Also interesting that you have not mentioned that overall style - iPhone is clearly better.
How easy is the Nokia to use? Nothing in the comparison. Looks like you are biased toward the Nokia….

  28. Though the price difference is too high and I do use a Nokia 5800, I believe iPhone does not have any competitor yet. iPhone’s user experience is totally different which is not comparable yet.

5800’s touchscreen isn’t comfortable at all. The material looks cheap (well, it is cheap) and the screen does not look uniform. The web browser has bad implementation, finger scrolling is not comfortable (where Opera Mini works better). Lack of applications, none of WLM Mobile, mig33 or ebuddy works. 5800’s still camera totally sucks, I didn’t get any Carl Zeiss output comparing to N95’s one. The 3.2MP camera is totally useless. But the video camera is really nice.

Btw my Nokia 5800 is in Nokia Care now, as it had some graphics glitch issue :?

Well, I still prefer 5800, expecting a better firmware, which will upgrade at least the web browser and the camera. Screw iPhone.

But it recharges very fast and i have the possibility recharge it several times a day so the battery life isn’t really a problem for me.

your willing to pay another $350 for a phone to tell you how fast your car is going or that lets you pretend to fire a shotgun? There is functionality in one sense, most mobile phones happened to cover what you deem “functional” many years ago. What the iphone appears to be giving is novelty and gimmicks. My friend, having had one thinks the iphone is a really cool waste of money. But i think thats a bit harsh

    [Reply To This Comment]

    Paystey Reply:

Yeh there are a lot of novelty items on there but there are many programs which are very useful. until other phones join something like the App store then they won’t get programs like Last.fm’s App or AIM both of which are free, there are other good apps too which you can pay anywhere from 99c - $10 for but they would have to be worth that extra cash. This means you don’t shell out the cost when you buy the phone for functionality that you won’t even use.

I did mean worth the extra cash spent on the App itself not the phone. But if you have to pay more for the extra customizability and compatability and to be honest Apple do take top trump with their OS.
