iPhone 3G, Apple’s most recent release of the iPhone series has met real competition recently with the new release from Nokia, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic code-named ‘Tube’. Now this is certainly not for Apple Fans because what I’m going to talk about is something that is not might not be in favor of iPhone.

Since it’s release, iPhone has created a new vision in the world of cell-phones. the whole touch system and the applications drove millions of people crazy. But now, things are a bit different. Unlike the golden times for Apple, now nokia 5800 has proved that iPhone is not the only one in the game. Probably that’s the reason I thought of writing this Nokia 5800 Vs iPhone comparison. Overall, I personally think that Nokia 5800 has been built to counter the growing influence of iPhone and also add all the features that were recommended by Apple users, which now gives them a better choice. So here is a comparison table with features that each phone either supports of does not support:

# Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Apple iPhone 3G
1 Nokia’s XpressMusic series has been widely famous for its great music quality, plus nokia has also pushed in a new online music store, plus any XpressMusicc phone comes in with a 1 year subscription to download unlimited songs (with DRM). Apple’s online music store, iTunes has been a major player for their music advance, but their music qualities and online integration have made them really popular in terms of music.
2 This cell phone comes in with a 3.2 Mega pixels camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and dual flash, this is quite enough for just a phone. The iPhone came in with just a 2 Megapixels camera and no Flash nor Carl Zeiss optics.
3 It claims up to 35 hours of Music, and it is overall better either for voice, data and standby (about 15 to 30% more) It has up to 24 hours of Music, and other technical specifications regarding the Battery life are below Nokia 5800.
4 It comes with a 8GB Micro SD Card, so this is definitely better because upgrading memory would be very cheap and easy. It comes in two forms, 8GB and 16GB internal. Although that is quite a lot but extending memory in any case is not possible.
5 It has a 3.2″ screen with a resolution of 640×360, which means a higher resolution on relatively not so big screen. It has a 3.5″ screen with a resolution of 480 x 320, which means a small resolution on a big screen, not very impressive.
6 It does not only offer finger touch but stylus and plectrum as well which gives us more choices on the Input method. It basically depends on personal taste as iPhone only offers finger touch as the input method.
7 Video Recording is another common feature of a Nokia mobile. In addition you can record videos with the standard Nokia application and make video calls, something not yet possible on the iPhone. Although the iPhone is capable of playing some video formats some services have to be installed whereas they come pre-installed in nokia 5800.
8 This is the best part, an unlocked Nokia 5800 XpressMusic costs $390 only, which is quite amazing compared to the features. Buying an iPhone involves some serious money, Since it is always bought with a contract, paying for the first month and then the cancellations fees and all, A single iPhone with all these costs included would cost you about $800, see the difference!

I think that the results are very clear leading to one result, that until iPhone makes another release with more features Nokia 5800 is to stay on top, not only because of the slick features but also because it gave birth to a whole new concept to all of the cellular companies like Nokia to keep up with the generation. So after reading the iPhone Vs Nokia 5800 comparison, you still with iPhone 3G, or have you made a little change of mind?

Well I had the same problem and I can happily tell you that it’s easy to fix it :) :)

How to Fix the Nokia 5800 “Expired Certificate” Installation Error:

    1) Backup all your messages, contacts, notes, calendar entries, etc. by using Nokia PC Suite.

    2) After you have the backup, you have to remove the MicroSD card. Do not remove the card directly when the phone is on, card and data can get corrupt. Follow these steps to remove MicroSD card-

    a) Press the power key, sroll down and select “Remove Memory Card” option.
    b) Press ‘YES’ when asked “Removing memory card will close all open applications. Remove anyway?”
    c) Shortly after, the “Remove Memory Card and press OK” message appears, the microSD is ready to be unplugged or removed now from the dedicated slot.

    3) Enter *#7370# code on your screen to restore the phone to Factory Default Settings. This will delete all your personal data.

    4) Next, you will be asked the phone lock code, if you have not changed this earlier, enter the default one which is 12345.

    5) The phone will reboot, select your country as “HONG KONG”. Some users reported the phone works fine even while selecting their correct country but for some only HONG KONG works. Its better to chose Hong Kong here for now, we can change it later.

    6) Power off the phone again and put back the Micro SD card in its slot.

    7) Restart the phone and Voila!! your Nokia 5800 is ready to install any signed application.

Hope the above steps makes you guys happy and finally get rid of this annoying certificate error. Cheers!!

    ekco Reply:

the thing is that apple themselves haven’t made very much use of the multi-touch feature apart from when zooming photos or websites. no multi-touch is available where it would really help, like selecting text to copy and paste, which is still not available 2 years after release, or other features that are unexplainable missing from the iphone..

with this in mind, i would say that since nokia has had and additional 2 years to study the very capable, robust (the iphone passed the 3 story drop test, and has even survived being run over by a cement truck) and good looking alpha male of touch-phones, they should have been able to make a WAY more impressive phone than the 5800, in terms of both features and looks.

Hey, I really like 5800 too. But I fear that it will lag since it has a 376 MHz processor vs iPhone’s 524 MHz processor. The reviewer should take the internal hardware in account too. Not so great comparison. Nothing written about their OS, accessories bundle, freedom to use any SIM with Nokia etc. POOR REVIEW.

    [Reply To This Comment]

    Abdulrehman Reply:

Well I take value of your criticism but unfortunately you are in the minority. Reviews are ‘mostly’ conducted with features in view, not their hardware. I hope I cleared the point.

    [Reply To This Comment]

    Prashant Reply:

Sorry for the harsh words, buddy. I think you took it emotionally.
Still, I would say that it’s not me who is in minority but it is you who really is.
When we talk about computers (mobiles too are portable computers), it is always necessary to take into account at least some basic internal hardware information like RAM or Processor or Internal Memory etc.
Mind you, these features (although you don’t call them features) are important for all those visible features. Fast processor ensures no lagging. Huge RAM ensures smooth multitasking. 3D chip makes playing 3D games a pleasure. Dedicated audio chip provides a hope of pumping some good music etc. etc. etc.
Hope you understand my point now.
However, we both are geeks and hence friends. So Cool Down.
    :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

    Abdulrehman Reply:

First off, I don’t take comments emotionally. After all, everyone has a freedom of thought and speech. I don’t respond to 80% of the comments on the blog but I thought this one needed one. I have enough to say to fill up a PDF file, but I’ll just summarize it: These are those features that people care about. There are more than 22 Comments before yours and I didn’t find anyone mention ‘hardware’ in specific. 376 MHZ is not less, we wont be sending a million applications using a cell phone. At the end of the day, it still is a cell phone. 8)

Although I appreciate your hardware knowledge, but I have a 3 months diploma in that field and hence I am familiar to things as big as the ram, to as many as the computer’s registers in internal components. Don’t mind this but I’m not a geek, check my picture in the about page and then let me know if I look or sound like one. I’m cooler than the other side of your pilow, so don’t worry!

    King Reply:

First, hats off to Prashant for noting such an immense blunder in your review. Second, I pity Abdul Rehman, for 2 things; He criticized Prashant’s comment after taking it too personally (which he denied, by the way) and then, I made a very similar comment to this one, and like a two-year-old, he deleted the comment. Very IM-mature man. Very immature.

You obviously took his comment way too seriously, and that doesn’t speak too well about your character.

And, about deleting comments, what happened to the statement you made in the above post: “…everyone has a freedom of thought and speech..”. Why say something like that and delete someone else’s thoughts? Sad…

You said; “… it still is a cellphone…”. These phones are not merely cellphones, you self-acclaimed expert. They’re sophisticated devices called smartphones. Smartphones are miniature laptops. It’s always helpful to know the configuration of these devices. It’s much like buying a car without knowing the engine capacity. You can’t call it unnecessary information.

376 mHz is not less when compared to historic (almost antique) handsets, but in today’s world is definitely a handicap with multi-tasking, and other added features. And another point: Isn’t a slower processor going to badly effect the 5800′s performance when running the other features (that were so well advertised) that the iPhone doesn’t have? Hence, making it an inferior product.

Please don’t think that a three-month diploma and reading some IT magazines are achievements enought to be sooo proud of. It’s not like it’s a PhD. Someone should show you the difference (with the help of a few pictures you can colour-in).

I stand by what Prashant said and respect to him for the view.
Also, he was naming devices as a form of stating examples. Unlike you, trying technical terms to sound more knowledgeable than you actually are..

You have enough to say to fill up a PDF file? Are you so desperate to sound knowledgeable?! A PDF file by itlself does not imply any length. It could contain anywhere from 1 to infinite characters, theoretically. So, another misinformed statement. Like I said, that diploma isn’t anything to be too proud of.

Another thing; your ignorant comment about the geek thing; a geek is person with technical knowledge in a particular field, usually computers. Nothing to do with appearance or speech. So, nothing to do with your picture…

You come of as someone a little too proud with themself.
I thought I should take you down a notch.

    Abdulrehman Agha Reply:

Thanks for writing a big comment. I don’t delete comments(you should’ve contacted me if your comment did not appear), Do you know more about me than me myself?! LMAO!(The geek thing). My bad I called them a cell-phone. I’m still laughing on the PDF point. The diploma acknowledgment was not to show that I’m an expert, instead to show that I’m not ignorant on the subject of hardwares. I never felt proud( :| ), and taking me down a notch? Thank you, come again (Like Apu in simpsons says)

    King Reply:

    Nice reply.
And nice touch with the apu quote.

On another note, I don’t know more about you than you do. It’s just that your writing mannerisms give away a lot about you. Most of it being egotistical and ignorant.

All the best with trying to sound smart. And carry on L(your)AO.

The comparison is fair in parts and unfair in others. For example, the screen on the iPhone IS impressive! It is odd that you have commented in the negative! You also have neglected to mention that that the iPhone is leagues ahead in terms of touchscreen tech. You have stated it’s a matter of personal taste and yet the Nokia Tube is being billed as touch screen. Also interesting that you have not mentioned that overall style – iPhone is clearly better.
How easy is the Nokia to use? Nothing in the comparison. Looks like you are biased toward the Nokia….

Though the price difference is too high and I do use a Nokia 5800, I believe iPhone does not have any competitor yet. iPhone’s user experience is totally different which is not comparable yet.

5800′s touchscreen isn’t comfortable at all. The material looks cheap (well, it is cheap) and the screen does not look uniform. The web browser has bad implementation, finger scrolling is not comfortable (where Opera Mini works better). Lack of applications, none of WLM Mobile, mig33 or ebuddy works. 5800′s still camera totally sucks, I didn’t get any Carl Zeiss output comparing to N95′s one. The 3.2MP camera is totally useless. But the video camera is really nice.

Btw my Nokia 5800 is in Nokia Care now, as it had some graphics glitch issue :?

Well, I still prefer 5800, expecting a better firmware, which will upgrade at least the web browser and the camera. Screw iPhone.

your willing to pay another $350 for a phone to tell you how fast your car is going or that lets you pretend to fire a shotgun? There is functionality in one sense, most mobile phones happened to cover what you deem “functional” many years ago. What the iphone appears to be giving is novelty and gimmicks. My friend, having had one thinks the iphone is a really cool waste of money. But i think thats a bit harsh

    [Reply To This Comment]

    Paystey Reply:

Yeh there are a lot of novelty items on there but there are many programs which are very useful. until other phones join something like the App store then they won’t get programs like Last.fm’s App or AIM both of which are free, there are other good apps too which you can pay anywhere from 99c – $10 for but they would have to be worth that extra cash. This means you don’t shell out the cost when you buy the phone for functionality that you won’t even use.

I did mean worth the extra cash spent on the App itself not the phone. But if you have to pay more for the extra customizability and compatability and to be honest Apple do take top trump with their OS.

there will always be more games coming out for the nokia, and there are still plenty to entertain yourself for a while :)
Nokia 5800 is excellent, bought one few weeks ago and have been extremely impressed!
Sure, there are a few less apps for the nokia, but the cameras pretty good in comparison to the ipod, and sound quality is amazing!
I am truly impressed by the nokia, and sure you would be too!

A few less??? noo you are wrong, there is nothing for Nokia. I had the Nokia n95 but its not as good as the Iphone. About the camera there is an app on cydia that
converts the 2megapixel camera in a 4mg. I know the camera of the 5800 rocks but who has money to buy an iPhone sure has enough money to buy a professional camera.

How can Nokias phone sell if they don’t even has a name to sell it this is all about marketing and apple knows how to do that. iPhone and 5800 what name does stick more in your mind. iPhone operational system is a Killer for any company who try to compete and that’s the end.

Ammm guys, if your debt is between iphone or 5800
I’ll say wait for a new iphone to come out this june!
But either so, my friend got 5800 and me ihpone 3G not only me said that 5800 is lame compared to the iphone but do so all my classmates, and himself too!
If you compare audio quality! dont get fooled with cheap headphones that comes with the phone. I have pare of bose on th ear, and I plug it to the nokia and got very sad, this phone cant! put out full potential of the real headphones like iphone/ipod does! the camera of the 5800 suck more then apple’s carl zeiss is like a trademark for lens for phones, cuz like u know all the phones like samsung and lg got carl zeiss.
dont know how but apple did very good job on the 2mpixel camera.
5800 is not multitouch and got lame graphics, the audio player is not so comfortable and for a finger its a whole story to press on tiny option buttons that 5800 have stylus is good, but how often can u use a stick?
Only one thing that i liked in that phone is that u can choose between keyboards and its recognize your drawing in to the letters all the rest is pretty lame!
iphone is smoking that junk out.
another thing is you can’t see nothing out the sun light, iphone got auto brightness feature that making a nice job on that.
So till then nokia n97, 5800 is lame!
and sure see on what is coming cuz nokia is a smart ass company they are always waiting for an apple to release their masterpiece so they can copy it!

    @ rat

you compare features that both the iphone and nokia 5800 have in common like the cam, music playing capabilities and playback quality and the touchscreen UI. Sure maybe the iphone does better on those things as you said, but is that all the iphone is good at?

If so then its hardly worth my money. Because the iphone may exceed the 5800 in some of its highlight features but i dont think the 5800 is trying to outperform the iphone in those areas. The nokia 5800 offers much more, more so that it has features a basic nokia phone and other low end phones possess like mms sending, video calls, sms forwarding to name a few. As for the sound quality, try plugging the nokia 5800 to an X-mini max and hear the difference. For having so much features for half the price, i really dont see why you have to settle for the uber expensive iphone.

Your friend has no idea what his phone is capable of at half the price of the iphone, sooner or later people with the nokia 5800 will start showing off features your iphone can only dream of having. Unless apple releases its new iphone which by that time will probably lose its charm from the mistakes its made from its earlier releases.

And I dont think nokia copied the idea of a touchscreen phone from the iphone, nokia released a touchscreen phone years before the iphone was available, it was the 7710, so there, to me the iphone is on its last leg and soon the next iphone will just be outperformed as easily by another phone half its price.

Hey you ALL forgot the one feature that the iPhones have that NO NOKIA has.
It is the SNOB factor. Anyone with an iphone is noticed, Nokias, LGs, Samsung….who cares! People are SNOBS…yes even those of you that say “Oh no they are not me”
Steve Jobs has done a great job of marketing like his comrade Bill Gates. He has made a product that everybody wants. It is not just about features , it is about appearance, making believe, coming out of the crowd, being noticed. if a kid wants to look cool he or she’ll get an iPhone, who cares if the 5800 is cheaper and better.
iPhone is fashionable and we all want it. If you were buying units for your employees you’d get them 5800s but the boss, he/she must have an iPhone.. it is a “keeping up with the Jones next door” need.
The iphone is way overpriced, Steve needs his jet maintained! You can get a small computer for 100 euros less than an iphone, but today the iphone makes you look cool, the notebook doesn’t

Well last week i bought nokia 5800 but i am not impressed at all. Features are very good but using any third party software is painful. Smart movie gives crappy video, with xplore it is hard to select file and xplore & smart movie menu & exit button is difficuilt to press. I think 5800 is still new & quality softwares will come after some time. Wifi is great & atlast nokia extended s60 voice recording to 1 hour. Camera is poor then previous models (i had n73). The biggest thing i hate about s60v3 onwards is their signing procedure why they are limiting us to use some crap expesive softwares while many of freeware is unsigned and signing them is very time consuming & painful.
While i used iphone of my friend & found iphone even worse. No video recording, no mms, can not send sms to multiple reciepents, songs videos can only be transfered through itunes softwares have same procedure & only 2 megapixl camera with no flash. However some iphone problems are solved by jailbreaking & some nokia 5800 problems are solved by hacking phone.
Nokia 5800 is only Rs.28000 in pakistan while iphone is not officially launched and its price ranges 35000~60000 rupees depending upon condition

Iphone has this pretty interface&multimedia that keep ppl around the world crazy fr this phone. On the other hand, N5800 has full pocket function freak at its dispose. With iphone ,you cant send/receive ringtone,mp3,picture&anything via Bluetooth. You can only use it fr handsfree. what good is that?? Iphone cant change its battery at hand, cant do multi-tasking. With N5800, you can do all whatever(i mentioned just now) iphone cant..input method fr iphone is only via finger while N5800 you have plectrum, writing and finger. I was so sad that my friend bought a so expensive iphone only to realise later that he cant send/receive mp3,his fav ringtone and picture from his old phone. So what do you think??

I was wondering which one of these to get. I just got the 5800. Here’s why:

    1) It’s a hell of a lot cheaper
    2) The camera is 3.2M (vs 2M) with flash and video capture
    3) The internet browser supports flash and java
    4) Bluetooth for data transfer
    5) Quality external speaker
    6) GPS with turn by turn navigation
    7) Expandable memory slot
    8) Support for wma files
    9) Better battery life and removable battery (which can easily be replaced without having to replace the device)
    10) Video calling
    11) Much better screen resolution

All the above features are not available on the iPhone. The only advantages on the iPhone 3G are basically all asthetic:

    1) Better UI
    2) Made from better materials
    3) Apps (Most of which are only great for procrastinating (EG the light saber app, I mean wtf))
    4) Snob factor

There is no doubt that the iPhone 3G is a good phone. But for less than half the price you can get the 5800 which has every major feature the iPhone has (apart from the apps) plus a hell of a lot more.

Here are my personal view between these 2 HOT gadgets:

if you looking for “classy” actual gadget, you choose IPHONE but better to accepts the consiquences.

If your looking for “USEFUL” actual gadget, you choose N5800.

I say this so, because IPHONE is SUCKS in terms of feature, I mean generally. You cant transfer your music/video by cut and paste. You use ITUNES to transfer/sync to it and this makes me really sick. Unlike 5800, you can do anything you want.

In terms of GUI, i agree that IPHONE is much better than 5800. But this is a lesser factor if your looking for an OVERALL performance.

SO, its up to you, you have the choice where gadget best for you!

Well the general standard of English in this thread is worsened only by the complete lack of objectivity!
I own an iPhone, have used the 5800 quite a bit and owned an N95 until a few weeks ago. The touchscreen on the iPhone beats that on the 5800 by miles – you can use your fingers (the stylus approach has been done by palm for years and even they’ve moved on!). Also as another poster pointed out the multitouch approach allows for really innovative uses.
The battery life is shorter than I’d like but can be extended by turning 3g only when you need it (same with wireless) – the apps are just so addictive I don’t mind having to charge every other night at least.
I also had such a poor experience with my N95 that risking another 18 month contract on a phone that shows signs of not being hugely different under the hood was not something I was willing to do (low memory anyone? Not yet-then just you wait a few more months!)

Researchers have discovered a flaw within Apple’s iPhone SMS feature, an exploit that could allow a hacker access to your iPhone, disabling it and rendering it utterly useless. The exploit was publicized today at Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas today.

Cybersecurity researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner discovered how they can disable any iPhone via a simple SMS. The exploit sent consumers into pandemonium, questioning if they should shut off their iPhone’s as of Thursday, when the exploit was demonstrated and documented to the public. The exploit shows up on the victims device as a single square character.

Save yourself some money and get the iPod touch, its half the price of an iPhone and is slimmer, but make sure you get a Belkin sleeve to cover the back, Apple have a nasty habbit of making utterly bad surfaces prone to scratches beyond belief, the iPod touch has WiFi and its got a reasonable display and plays good games, I can see the Sony PSP and DS becoming obsolete sine the PSP internet’s cabability leaves a lot to be desired.

Now a cheap phone would set you back £5.00 for a Sony Ericsson J132, so why Apple has the audacity to charge you double the price of an iPod Touch to get an iPhone is down to greed.

Now if you want to compare beasts, then you need to look at the Blackberry range of phones, although the Blackberry’s don’t come equipped with Carl Zeiss or CyberShot, the picture quality has always been amazing even from their 2MP 8300 Curve model. I personally use the 8820 Wifi w/out camera since a digital camera is dedicated and I’m not a fan of jack of all trade gadgets…Blackberry internet PUSH email is legendary, I havent tried another brand because I know Blackberry is the Pioneer of PUSH email. Also a touch screen is simply no where as reliable as a Solid miniature keyboard, hence the BlackBeyy will always ROCK.

I just ordered the N5800 (yesterday) can’t wait to get my hands on it. I like the fact that you can switch from stylus to finger and vice versa on the 5800. I think Iphone is really cool though, but way too expensive. I also like to fact that the 5800 is more customizable compare to the iphone when it comes to expendable memory and even sofware personalization (plz correct me if I’m wrong). After I lost my palm treo 750 while traveling which I really like except for the “no wifi”. I’ve researched for a replacement for a while and conluded that the 5800 is the perfect choice. Hopefully I will not be disapointed (I doubt it though). I still think the Iphone is king on the 3g network while browsing, however if I had to vote based on overall features and prices, my pick would be the N5800…also typing on the iphone is a pain in the derrière untill you’re used to it…so Go N5800.

The phone does its own thing when it feels like it and is pretty much no use whatsoever when you need it. I replaced an XDA Mini S with this rancid piece of crap and have now taken my SIM card out of the Nokia and gone back to this old phone as it is better by a long way. Yes, the iPhone is an expensive piece of hardware but the Apps make all right, the 5800 is a great multimedia device overall, and has great hardware but, i think Nokia has to think really hard about dropping Symbian and go for Maemo on all new phones, maybe with a shiny new OS like that + Nokia’s Excellent Hardware + a real Apps solution like the App Store + a decent, easy to use SDK’s nokia could kick Apple ass, right now Apple is winning the battle, specially with the 3GS. Hey all,

I had an IPhone, which got stolen – it was an early 3g model from oversease. I have to admit, after all the hype about it, I was dissapointed in it after a few days of owning one. My previous phone was a SonyEricsson Cybershot that took awesome pictures at 5MP. The IPhone had no flash so most of the pictures didn’t work out – Crap.
Oh, and I didn’t think the touch screen on the IPhone was so great, many times i’d have to do a retake on dialing a number because it didn’t recognise what i had entered – Annoying.
Another thing that I really hated about the IPhone is that I couldn’t do video calling because of the absent front VGA camera – Lame.
Yeah so I’ve researched a lot and will be picking up my new Nokia 5800 in 2 days – also got it at less that half what I paid for the IPhone.

Cos it’s Nokia, I’m not worried about the phone stuff like video calling, mms, wifi, taking photos, playing all kinds of music and video. I know that’ll all work great.
I worry bout the touch screen and the lag that everyone mentions.
I did have a bit of a play around with one at the store. didn’t notice any lag, but noticed that for things like texting, the stylus was more efficient than a finger, but that was the same with IPhone.
Only difference is Nokia actually give you a stylus – Yay

    Well, wish me luck http://www.3arn.net/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Both of these two handset got its pros and cons and it targeted at different people. Nokia can do multi tasking whereas the iphone cant do it . But what makes the Iphone superior is its app store which is proven succesfully even outdo the Nokia Ovi. Stability and money wise sure is Nokia 5800 as the Iphone is like draining consumer money before you bought and after (apps do cost $$). Nokia had also built up its own reputation in many people’s heart ..Connecting People…… Iphone is a badass toys for the person that wants more entertaiment especially the game available and their OPENGL  or maybe fashion? Nokia 5800 is for person who wanted to try something that are more money wise and productivity?

    5. Iphone keyboard takes a bit of getting used to..I have had the phone for 2 months and i can now type at 45 words per minute.
    6. Third party apps are available to enable video recording(3gvideorecorder) and bluetooth transfers(iBluetooth) in iphone 3g.
    7. Features like cut paste, MMS etc are available now.
    8. Amazing Handheld Gaming device with over 6000 Quality games to choose from(To see how amazing they are… try searching “Iphone games” in youtube.

Looking at all the Nokia fanboys here who claim the 5800 is better than the iPhone, I just smile at the delusion that is floating around. We have one dude (Prasanth) who claims the 5800 has millions of apps (which is hilarious since it only has a little over 300) and another who claims the Nokia has better camera, build quality and media player. The iPhone trumps the Nokia in almost all respects. Let me tell you what I use my 3GS for. Can you match my phone with your 5800? Or for that matter, can you match what I do with the iPhone with ANY phone in the market. The app store with all its 100,000 apps beats everything the 5800 has to offer over and over and over and over again. Here goes…

    1. Facebook and Twitter apps.

    2. Google App for gmail, orkut, picasa, calender, docs, gtalk, RSS reader, latitude, book reader, Translator, youtube and gEarth. Moreover, google has voice search.

    3. dictionary.com + Thesaurus, including pronunciation.

    4. Weather updates, temp, forcast, weather radar, weather video.

    5. Skype, Palringo, Nimbuzz, eBuddy etc., (IM and VOIP apps)

    6. GPS. For maps and guidance.

    7. GPS – for tracking my run and extrapolating information onto a map. The app I use is called MotionX GPS, and it calculates my speed (current, top and avg.) distance, miles/min and minutes/mile. It also determines altitude, latitude and longitude.

    8. Compass

    9. Wikipedia

    10. FML and TWI apps – two of the best in the app store.

    11. Free texting in the US through textplus. Free texting between iPhones and iPod Touches any where in the world through Ping! A lot of other texting apps.

    12. ToDo’s, Task managers and Reminder apps,

    13. New apps – CNN, WSJ, AP, NBC,

    14. Countless medical apps. It lets me check symptoms, manage my diet, calories and control weight.

    15. Gym apps – my personal trainer. Charts my workout schedule, gives me tips and shows me videos on the best ways to do an exercise.

    16. Yelp, Where, UrbanSpoon, ManGo etc., – Apps which help me find new restaurants, cheapest gas, sights, attractions, and everything based on your location. It also has filters, through which you can decide what you want to eat, price, availablity and location.

    17. Traffic, Aha etc., – apps which tell me the traffic patterns and in the route I’m driving through. It instantly updates me in case of an accident ahead, so I can reroute and avoid the congestion. There are other apps which tell me about speedtraps and cameras, so I can slow down.

    18. Tons of image processing apps through which you can process pictures taken through the camera.

    19. Sports apps which keep me constantly updated on all my favorite teams. This includes football, cricket, soccer, F1, Tennis, Golf etc., And the best part is Push Notifications which instantly send me score updates.

    20. Starbucks app – lets me prepare my favorite coffee and it also lets me pay for coffee through the app.

    21. Shutterfly and other similar apps – lets me access all the photos I upload to shutterfly.com. This way, I don’t have to carry all of my 50,000+ pictures with me all the time.

    22. Topography apps – lets me view topography maps, possible avalanches and much more.

    23. Craigslist, amazon and other shopping apps.

    24. imeem, pandora, winamp and other online streaming radios.

    25. And the final, and the best of them all – Winamp Remote + Orb. This lets me access all my music stored in my computer, so I don’t have to worry about not having all my music with me.

I have just scratched the surface and didn’t talk about the iTunes store, podcasts, countless games, entertainment, productivity, lifestyle etc., apps. I haven’t even started talking about the potential of the device if you jailbreak it. With over 100,000 apps, and an average of 8000 apps submitted to Apple everyday, I seriously doubt the iPhone’s competition. But again, the iPhone is all about internet capabilities, and you can only exploit the phone if you have 3G availability. That notwithstanding, overall, the iPhone trumps the 5800 and every other phone in the market.

To the people who are deciding what to buy, get an iPhone if you know whats good for you.

what dose apple do best? invent and innovate.
iPhone got on top because of that and since Jobs is back on the team the company had invested big time in the brand but the platform for that was the innovation. we haven’t seen a mindblowing device from apple lately so therefore their main marketing strategy is based on a strong brand. a once strong brand creates the medium necessary to sell your products if you can’t or will not get something innovative to the table.

if the basis for that brand dissipates it enters a cooldown time. apple is in this stage. technically they are behind the rest, but the brand keeps them going forward.

apple is the strongest brand still. but their products are not.

bottom line. apple will come up with some new gadget in about a year or so, otherwise rapid loss of market share will follow, especially in the smart phone category.

Jobs did it once, and he will do it again (with more brains), hopefully this time he won’t let the company drop into another dark age.

i believe it’s just a strategy why apple’s phone is getting outdated, but there is a small possibility that apple will disappear again.

personally i think is a good company with quality products and services, but i refuse to use them because their evolution is somewhat unpredictable especially with giants on the other end like MS, Nokia, HTC, Samsung, LG, Panasonic,… generally every IT/Multimedia hardware company is against them, that is why it’s so easy to find a better alternative to apple.

    I DON’T BUY BRANDS.

    and screw the app store.
i do my own apps, and i don’t have to worry about licenses. iPhone apps is like pay and don’t think, i am like Think and don’t pay. and if we talk about money, there is no apple product that is cheaper than the alternative. but what the hell, the US has a nice loan system.

I’ve had an N5800 since February – bought it because it was WAY cheaper than the iPhone 3G, because it had a better camera and a flash and also because it had MMS and bluetooth. Previously I’d been using a Sony Ericsson with a GREAT 3.2MP camera and flash, but wanted a more capable phone with more features like wifi, gps, 8GB plus storage and so on.

In the last nine months, my Nokia 5800 has become slower and more annoying, even with upgrades and updates to firmware etc.. I also have an iPod touch which is a dream to use, so I started thinking about the iPhone 3GS, which is yes, still expensive – but certainly an inprovement on the 3G version and from everything I’ve seen on my friends’ iPhone 3GS phones (and there are MANY of them), there is really no comparison between the N5800 and the latest iPhone.

The iPhone now has a better camera (ok, still no flash, but the N5800 camera is grainy and the flash is a joke – not a patch on my old Sony Ericsson) is MUCH simpler to use, is faster, looks a lot sexier, is thinner, has a bigger and better touch screen (without the need for a stylus), easier to navigate and use, has FAR more great apps available to it, equally good sound AND can be used with Spotify – whereas Nokia phones are stuck with the bloody awful Nokia Ovi Music thing. And what a piece of crap THAT is.

Also, the iPhone FEELS better… whereas the N5800 has a ‘plasticy’ feel to it.

I am NOT an Apple nazi, and I usually run a mile from products which are just trendy or over hyped, as I thought the iPhone seemed to be. I really did want the N5800 to be the ‘iPhone killer’ it had been touted as. But after nine months, I’ve realised that it just ISN’T, that the iPhone 3GS is a great bit of gear, and that you get what you pay for.

The iPhone 3GS is much more expensive than the N5800 simply because it’s a much better product.

Yes apple has a grate appstore but what use are all those apps when your battery cant even last a day. The value for money is horrible when you look at the iphone. My nokia 5530 does all the same things and a bit more besides the gaming experience. But if i want to play games i use my laptop (has about the same battery life and you can swap batteries) Everybody who is older than 16 and does not want to hack their phone to customize it should not buy the iphone. And to all you people out there who think the iphones touch screen is so good should try writing with a stylus. The handwriting recognition works superbly and you can even customize it. Why pay 2000$ for the iphone(price in my country if you count in the monthly data) if i can pay below 300$ and get the 5530.

  • Julie said,

Yes, iPhone has over 100,000 apps now. Nokia and other smartphones have very few (under 16,000). But for those of us who don’t want or need to “play” with all those apps while out and about, there are a few select things the Nokia 5800 will do that an iPhone will not. This is absolutely true!
The primary thing being video calls. This is the reason I have a 5800 and NOT an iPhone or other smartphone. The Nokia has a front and rear-facing camera. The majority of calls that I make from home are via Skype, are international, and are VIDEO calls. I needed a cell that could do that, and the app called Fring makes that possible. But Apple has no plans to implement front and rear-facing cameras on its iPhone any time in the near future, so video calls will NOT ever seemingly be a possibility for iPhone :( even though there is a skype app for regular voice calls.
Also, those video calls, since they’re over 3G, and are via Skype, don’t come out of my minutes, they come out of my data usage, which is unlimited, and is pretty sweet. I can get away with having a data plan only on my 5800 and no voice (much cheaper than the data + voice that you need for the iPhone). And, by the way, you CAN use GPS w/Nokia – in fact, it’s much better than the GPS offered for iPhone.
However, while Nokia used to be the “gold standard” of cell phones, they have gone downhill significantly in the last few years. The sound quality on most xpress music phones is grainy and generally poor. The antenna quality and reception is incredibly weak! In fact, I couldn’t get a signal within ten miles of my house when I brought my 5800, an area I had gotten full bars in with the same carrier (and a Motorola Razr) previously.
However, iPhone’s reception is notoriously just as poor! I compared it to the 5800 with NO difference – still couldn’t get reception in the same areas I got service w/my Razr. Switched back to a Motorola, and bam, five bars. ( w/AT&T the whole time).
Nokia also manufactures phones with increasingly cheap parts. I had to exchange my 5800 SIX TIMES before I got one that didn’t fall apart right out of the box or give such a grainy sound when playing music it was completely inexcusable. This was out of the box – I didn’t even have a chance to use any of these phones before something fell off of them. No, they weren’t refurbished, and no, I didn’t drop them, throw them, etc.. I looked up reviews and found that Nokia users were having the same issues worldwide – parts falling off, bad reception.
I now live in an area where reception is excellent, and I use an MP3 player separately for music, so I’m able to keep my 5800 for video skype calls, for which it is amazing.
However, if I were going to buy a smartphone and didn’t need video calling, I wouldn’t buy a Nokia 5800 OR an iPhone. The leaders in smartphone technology are Android phones, like the Motorola Droid, Samsung, HTC, the newest Nokias (N97 and N900), and the Palm Pre. Although Motorola is clearly outperforming ALL OTHERS when it comes to reception and smartphone technology, they just need to get with it and allow video calls…. as do all the rest. That’s why, until video calls become the norm, I’m stuck w/my Nokia 5800.

    Dear Jarmo,

Reflecting back on my comment I made 1.5 years ago, Nokia IS going down. They have lost more than half of their market share by sticking to Symbian based OS and I’m surprised they haven’t been completely wiped out already. iPhone and Android lead the pack – my accurate prediction of the future of smartphones being driven by application oriented operating systems stands vindicated.

Nokia has also taken the plunge into the app based operating system with the tie-up with Microsoft, but it may already be too late.

  • Jamie said,

The Android is an excellent OS, and probably beats both these phones, but Google’s “Nexus One” will be the true iPhone Killer.

That may be true, the iPhone isn’t as expensive here in the US as it would be in other parts of the world.. It costs $800 in India, and that too it is the 3G, not the 3GS.

The iPhone has always been, and will be catered to an audience who can ACTUALLY afford the phone and its associated costs. You don’t have to buy it if you don’t want to, there are cheaper alternatives like the 5800 out there. But again, you pay what you get, be it utility, functionality and appeal.

If you talk about performance, again the iPhone beats the 5800 any day. 140,000 apps count for a lot.

And, a simple test will do.. go out and show both the devices to a lay man and a techno geek. You will be surprised to see which one they will pick if money is taken out of the equation.

I know. I would pick Nokia 5800 eight days in a week. I want a good camera too. There are other reasons like Flash but a reasonably good camera in the phone is a must for me.
If there is no good camera – then I consider the phone as a budget phone.

How many apps do you use in your iPhone – and how many not? And then again:
You are stuck to iTunes, you don´t have flash – and think about this: Nokia has three
different systems, the Linux Nokias runs iPhone apps! (which are basicly Debian apps).

The iphone is the combination of a (simple) cell phone and an ipod (MP3 player). MP3 players are for kids and teens. So I don’t consider the iphone a business phone. In fact at the current price the iPhone is far out of reach for its initial target audience. Teens can’t afford it and no parrent with brains will buy a +600$ mp3-phone for their kid. At the moment Apple targets the yuppies with deep pockets and oddly enough it seems to work well for them.

Nokia’s appeal is to price consious consumers with less deep pockets. They provide good basic telephony with decent smartphone features at an attractive price. This is the largest market but unfortunatly not the loudest market (if you get what i mean).

I only want a phone as a phone to talk and not all the other gizzmo’s in addition i did not want to change my contract from the unlimited off peak and all weekend call package i’ve had for the las 4 yrs. Anyway, when i got the phone it was very light compared to my old sony eric. k810i built like a brick and incredibily robust. I was quite happy cos it is fairly easy to download music onto it. It came with 16gb micro sd memory card and not bad sounding…ok you cant expect a ‘bose’ quality of sound. The best bit was the nokia ovi suite which contained a SAT NAV package with 21 countries. It took me about the best part of 8 hours to update the software for maps and firmware and before you ask yes i was doing this on a fixed line broadband connection, although my download speed was not that great. Apparantly nokia claim it is free SAT NAV service with no charges. I have not used it as yet but it looks as though it works and has useful city maps……I’m always getting lost what a great idea !!! My word is this the end of my tom tom and all map updates are free. It has great voice command function so if you set it up right you can call all your contacts buy just presing 1 button in addition to calling up calender and creating new text messages…….its really cool. Ok i know it is based on fetaures of the iphone but i think its a good all rounder but maybe not as cosmetically as sexy in design as the iphone but i think its looks to be the best phone i have had to date…….Mmmm alright i know i have only had it a couple of days. It has passed one drop test already and still works. So overall i would score it 7/10.

I have to say as someone who has a Blackberry, Nokia touch phones, and an iPhone 3GS, that when it comes down to it, nothing can beat the iPhone. The apps I now use on the iPhone allow me to do almost everything from the phone (budget, invoicing, email, web browsing, etc). While these things are also possible on other phones, it comes down to easy of use, speed, fun factor, etc. Its simply not as fun to do these things on any other device, and for me this means that I do almost everything on the iPhone, while the blackberry stays in my pocket, hardly used for much more than phonecalls, and the Nokia stays at home in the cupboard as a spare phone. It costs a lot, but an iPhone will change your life, and the way use a phone. :P

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

Thats nice to you! I don´t need a phone to change my life, there is substance enough already. And fun. I understand iPhone is good for app 15% of people, the one who had bought it, the rest 85% will do without – they prefere something else.
I am one of them. Now I wait for Nokia N8 with the 12mpix camera as one of the things I need in my phone. 16.000 apps are enough for me simply because they are good ones not just “apps”. And there is much more like free GPS. And of course
flash and Skype, which I also need – things Apple have not. But that is my needs.

To even mention the Nokia 5800 in the same sentence as the sublime i-phone is sacrilege.
The Nokia 5800 is a truly shameful piece of awful crud that is both over engineered and ugly to look at. It is as if they stole every piece of i-phone tech and made a version one tenth as good – an embarrassment!.

If you want a computer and can afford a great one – buy a mac
If you want a mobile phone and can afford a great one – buy an i-phone

Its that simple, sorry folks – and all the rubbish every one spouts about Apple is boring nonsense. If every one hates Apple then why is every phone and computer developer trying in vain to copy them!

Must dash – I need to hammer some nails into a wall with the 5800.

People don´t hate Apple, why should they? They just like
Nokia better (41% smartphone marketshare, iPhone 7%).
Maybe you are the one that is lost, I really think so.

Nokia is not an Apple copy, only one (5800) is done to meet iPhone,
the rest of them are not, like the next N8.
I don´t understand you, having a phone that virtually can´t meet any of todays
requirements, still you think it is “the only one”. Love is blind.

haha, the age old argument is that people will defend what works for them as the “best” and “only” option out there, even when of course it is not.

“Nokia may have the market share, but Apple has mastered its share of the market.”

Ask any Nokia user what they think of their phone over all. Half of them will tell you “its just another phone”, I got it with an upgrade, etc. Most users do not install OVI store apps, or use their phone for much more than making calls and reading emails.

The iPhone is completely different, due its core design. Almost all users have downloaded apps from the AppStore, and enjoy the apps they have. They use the apps daily, and the apps have a practical use as well as being so useful and easy to use, that they are fun to use.

Not to mention all the crashing and bugs with Nokia’s. iPhone (much like mac computers) simply does not crash. This alone make the whole iPhone experience far superiour to that of any Nokia or other smartphone.

In closing, to each his own. I have tried all the options, and have a Blackberry, Nokia touch phone, and an iPhone 3GS, and I can say from experience of working in depth with each of these that the iPhone really is the best around.

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

Thats simple stupidity. There are two numbers that tells the whole story and they are 85 vs 15%. What people say is one thing, it´s how they act what counts. And by the way – I am not defending Nokia, Samsung, LG, Blackberry, Ericsson or any brand. I am telling you that you are stupid. I did it nicely but because you did not understand I do it this way. I am not even discussing the phones, only the fact that you are playing in a sandbox. Nothing more to discuss.

Nokia has had music dowloands even before somtehing existed like iPhone, so what is so special? I think there is about 50 different touchscreenphones only at the Swedish market, what is special? Nokia has even both resistive and capacitiv screens at your choise!
I am not telling you Nokia is better, I am just telling you that you don´t have a clue what you are talking about. There is nothing any Nokia smartphone can do that iPhone does, so what is your point? Well, iPhone 4 has now 2 cameras! Everyone having any other phone has used his or her for videotalking for 5 years now. Still you believe this is special för iPhone… weird

    [Reply To This Comment]

    John Gore Reply:

Jarmo, its not “special” that iPhone now has these features, it is how these features work and are presented that make them ground breaking.

I suggest you get yourself an iPhone, play with it for a bit, and then talk.

Most people used to pirate music rather than buy it in a Nokia music store. But for some reason (great design and ease of use) people that used to pirate music now rather buy it through the iTunes AppStore.

There is not need to be such a hater, just got get an iPhone, give it a try for a while, and you will see what iPhone users love their phones so much. ;)

I don´t hate iPhone, that should be quite obvious. I welcome new players to the market because i strongly believe in competition. My wife has Nokia-shares and I am of finnish origin – nevertheless. And I also belive people have slightly different needs why I would never tell anyone “my phone is the best”. Think about it.
“Go by yourself an iPhone…” I am not stupid, I know what I need. What about Apple-fans? Many, too many thinks that what is good for them is good for everyone, The phenomena was the same when iMac was introduced – and it will end the same way. iPhone sales are already declining (15% market share 7/31)

Knowing the market is part of my job, I can tell:
-Ii you just want to make calls and SMS – buy a phone for that, not a smartphone!
-If you want a good camera in your phone – by a Ericsson
-If you want a lot of music and good sound – buy a Nokia Express Music – but not 5800!
-If you want the best navigation in your phone (still not as good as a GPS device) buy a Nokia
-Never buy a used phone, not any!
-If you consider a smartphone – don´t even think about iPhone!
The antenna problem is not as simple as Steve Jobs let us to think, it is fundamental.
Look att Androids and Nokia, starting with whats coming up next (do always so).
-And don´t buy Apple, Nokia, Ericsson, HTC etc because you “love” the brand, buy a PHONE
you need! And don´t forget: your phone is the best for you, not for anyone else.
There is nothing like “my phone is best” only ignorant people think that way.
And only the most stupid ones gives words to that kind of thinking.
What I have? At the moment: the cheapeast Nokia possible. With radio and loudspeaker.

Everybody is aware of that almost all new smartphones have internet, so why show that basic function at its bear minimum. Scroll up scroll down zoom in zoom out. Actually? which new phone doesnt try this? How bout speak about how the text rearranges itsself. Also the texting, very poor review. Why didnt you mention you can use the mic and text along with your voice? Unnoticed ALOT of different more essential features

Apple has 15% marketshare (smartphone cellphones), the rest 85% are not stupid.
So how come owners of iPhone are so “convinced” their smartie is so good that they tell it to everyone and everywhere? Do they want the fight or what?

These discussions are similar to those MAc / PC once. The special thing is that people having Mac or iPhone don´t understand that because they love them other people have good reason to love something else – as the 85% have. Mostly they want a phone that meet their needs – not yours. And because of the great variaty of needs they choose something else but iPhone.

Yes, it meet your needs well, that´s why you bought it in the first place. But it does not meet the needs of the 85%. Is that hard to understand? To me it is not. My choice is Nokia N8.

    To avoid confusion.
Iwrote two kind of numbers iPhone 7 or 15% of global market. The first number is of course of all phones and the latter all samrtphones. iPhone sales has declined from 17 to 15 this year.
Nokia has 38,3% of total global market and 41% of smartphones. Stable.
Nokia has problems. It´s major problem is pricing, not sales. Apparenly but not necessarily the company has a defensive strategy which is lower prices to meet competition. Yes, I am a business scientist but maybe that is the reason i would not dare telling if the strategy is right or wrong, it depends on what the goals are the next few years. I cannot know, Im not in the board. The ccompany has not more money today than 12 months earlier – and not less.

Apple is something else. Puttining a phone to the market for a newcomer is a huge risktaking.
You MUST have a sales strategy that works, that is something Steve Jobs can at his fingertips.
To get attention without puttting in big money was one trick (create expectations before
sakes start, having fixed releas dates so the queus were a “must” and spectacular “shows”
in which he exited web-viewers are all part of a master salesmans work. THAT is how new
products that costs serious money to develope should be put in the market!

What happens when the sales drops (from 17 to 15% narketshare is an actual drop of 12%
lost territory for Apple). The developement costs has to be paid in a hurry, there is no risk
at all to the company but what happens to iPhone if the declining sales endure? Jobs did
really stir the market – now the “show-time” is here. Exciting times ahead.

The differences Nokia / Apple are not only in the products but in the way how they run the
business, corporate structure – everything. One may have wishes, favourites and so on but
what happens remains to see. I think we can have an idea before christmas already.

To all the Nokia fanboys out there, and everyone else who claims Nokia makes good phones, the present smartphone scenario is my answer to Nokia’s supposedly great “Smartphones” and they being better than any one else in the market.

Nokia failed to innovate, period. They assumed they already had a big market, and that consumers will buy whatever outdated technology Nokia peddles to them. It is so awesome to say “I told you so” when I accurately predicted Nokia is going down! I predicted the future of smartphones will be app-oriented OS, and that is exactly what we have today. Nokia, I’m sorry but you didn’t move fast enough. And the less said about the Ovi-store, the better.

And now, even Nokia has taken the plunge into app-oriented OS with the Windows OS. I think it is already too late though, with the amount of market penetration Android and iOS will gain by the time Windows-Nokia phones come out. Windows was never a successful platform in mobile phones, and I don’t see that happening any time soon.

I predict Nokia will either be bought over or will go down in the next two years. I’ll see you peeps then.
