  1. Noki fan says:

Nokia is better in one more way that is has a bluetooth feature inwhich we can transfer files from one phone to another and Iphone lacks that basic feature.

    Julie Reply:

Actually, no, iPhone has a feature where all you have to do is get it near the other iPhone and ALL files are transferred between phones - absolutely amazing. I’ve used the feature. I’m actually NOT a fan of iPhone, but am willing to admit it does virtually everything any other phone can do and more.

    Haerald Reply:

    Nokia is still better!!!

  2. Julie says:

Yes, iPhone has over 100,000 apps now. Nokia and other smartphones have very few (under 16,000). But for those of us who don’t want or need to “play” with all those apps while out and about, there are a few select things the Nokia 5800 will do that an iPhone will not. This is absolutely true!
The primary thing being video calls. This is the reason I have a 5800 and NOT an iPhone or other smartphone. The Nokia has a front and rear-facing camera. The majority of calls that I make from home are via Skype, are international, and are VIDEO calls. I needed a cell that could do that, and the app called Fring makes that possible. But Apple has no plans to implement front and rear-facing cameras on its iPhone any time in the near future, so video calls will NOT ever seemingly be a possibility for iPhone :( even though there is a skype app for regular voice calls.
Also, those video calls, since they’re over 3G, and are via Skype, don’t come out of my minutes, they come out of my data usage, which is unlimited, and is pretty sweet. I can get away with having a data plan only on my 5800 and no voice (much cheaper than the data + voice that you need for the iPhone). And, by the way, you CAN use GPS w/Nokia - in fact, it’s much better than the GPS offered for iPhone.
However, while Nokia used to be the “gold standard” of cell phones, they have gone downhill significantly in the last few years. The sound quality on most xpress music phones is grainy and generally poor. The antenna quality and reception is incredibly weak! In fact, I couldn’t get a signal within ten miles of my house when I brought my 5800, an area I had gotten full bars in with the same carrier (and a Motorola Razr) previously.
However, iPhone’s reception is notoriously just as poor! I compared it to the 5800 with NO difference - still couldn’t get reception in the same areas I got service w/my Razr. Switched back to a Motorola, and bam, five bars. ( w/AT&T the whole time).
Nokia also manufactures phones with increasingly cheap parts. I had to exchange my 5800 SIX TIMES before I got one that didn’t fall apart right out of the box or give such a grainy sound when playing music it was completely inexcusable. This was out of the box - I didn’t even have a chance to use any of these phones before something fell off of them. No, they weren’t refurbished, and no, I didn’t drop them, throw them, etc.. I looked up reviews and found that Nokia users were having the same issues worldwide - parts falling off, bad reception.
I now live in an area where reception is excellent, and I use an MP3 player separately for music, so I’m able to keep my 5800 for video skype calls, for which it is amazing.
However, if I were going to buy a smartphone and didn’t need video calling, I wouldn’t buy a Nokia 5800 OR an iPhone. The leaders in smartphone technology are Android phones, like the Motorola Droid, Samsung, HTC, the newest Nokias (N97 and N900), and the Palm Pre. Although Motorola is clearly outperforming ALL OTHERS when it comes to reception and smartphone technology, they just need to get with it and allow video calls…. as do all the rest. That’s why, until video calls become the norm, I’m stuck w/my Nokia 5800.

Nokia is going down.. People here have neither used the iPhone or Android and make claims about the potential of the 5800. Nokia makes good budget phones PERIOD!

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

There is no period in what Nokia does or not. They do phones over the whole range.
And Nokia is known for quality phones over the range.
Selling 100´s of millions of phones every year MUST result in some which is not working even if
I never hear of anybody earlier getting 5 phones that doesn´t work. Which supplier I must ask?
And no, Nokia is nog going down in any means, they hace increased their market share to over 40%
now, that is not going down. 2 of 5 phones sold inte the world are Nokia, what do you think???

But talking about personal experiences of cell-phones: I prefer Nokia N900 then Nokia 5800.
One good thing in a phone does not make the phone good for me. I want it all and I want it good.

  5. Jamie says:

Nokia make budget phones, but in a recession isn’t that a smart thing ? The iPhone’s operating system and touch screen may be better, but Nokia makes a better, stronger, more adaptable phone that is suited to you and not those greedy CEO’s sitting in Apple’s Head Office.

The Android is an excellent OS, and probably beats both these phones, but Google’s “Nexus One” will be the true iPhone Killer.

    Jamie.

    Suresh Reply:

That may be true, the iPhone isn’t as expensive here in the US as it would be in other parts of the world.. It costs $800 in India, and that too it is the 3G, not the 3GS.

The iPhone has always been, and will be catered to an audience who can ACTUALLY afford the phone and its associated costs. You don’t have to buy it if you don’t want to, there are cheaper alternatives like the 5800 out there. But again, you pay what you get, be it utility, functionality and appeal.

If you talk about performance, again the iPhone beats the 5800 any day. 140,000 apps count for a lot.

And, a simple test will do.. go out and show both the devices to a lay man and a techno geek. You will be surprised to see which one they will pick if money is taken out of the equation.

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

I know. I would pick Nokia 5800 eight days in a week. I want a good camera too. There are other reasons like Flash but a reasonably good camera in the phone is a must for me.
If there is no good camera - then I consider the phone as a budget phone.

How many apps do you use in your iPhone - and how many not? And then again:
You are stuck to iTunes, you don´t have flash - and think about this: Nokia has three
different systems, the Linux Nokias runs iPhone apps! (which are basicly Debian apps).

  8. Google Voice is a lifesaver. The functionality that it offers is amazing, like the ability to forward calls. I’ve got some invites if anyone wants any. Also I hope that Apple rethinks the Google Voice app, hwo could such an unruly app get denied by Apple?

  9. Saahil says:

Hey Guys and Gals I have neither of the phones, but I have worked
on both of the phones, I have worked on a N5800 and the I-ph. Personally, I
feel, I-Ph is a highly sophisticated and highly expensive phone for Indian Markets.. Where as N5800 is a perfect fit for our indian markets.. Its economical, sexy looking, sleek, and the best part is.. its not a business phone like Iph.

I still prefer Nokia 5800 but that is because personal preferances like a good camera with
also a good flash. But I can see why people like iPhone 3G S also.
Would i put that much money in a phone I would by the best - Nokia N900.

  11. Mike says:

Well….I got nokia 5800 couple of days ago. I only want a phone as a phone to talk and not all the other gizzmo’s in addition i did not want to change my contract from the unlimited off peak and all weekend call package i’ve had for the las 4 yrs. Anyway, when i got the phone it was very light compared to my old sony eric. k810i built like a brick and incredibily robust. I was quite happy cos it is fairly easy to download music onto it. It came with 16gb micro sd memory card and not bad sounding…ok you cant expect a ‘bose’ quality of sound. The best bit was the nokia ovi suite which contained a SAT NAV package with 21 countries. It took me about the best part of 8 hours to update the software for maps and firmware and before you ask yes i was doing this on a fixed line broadband connection, although my download speed was not that great. Apparantly nokia claim it is free SAT NAV service with no charges. I have not used it as yet but it looks as though it works and has useful city maps……I’m always getting lost what a great idea !!! My word is this the end of my tom tom and all map updates are free. It has great voice command function so if you set it up right you can call all your contacts buy just presing 1 button in addition to calling up calender and creating new text messages…….its really cool. Ok i know it is based on fetaures of the iphone but i think its a good all rounder but maybe not as cosmetically as sexy in design as the iphone but i think its looks to be the best phone i have had to date…….Mmmm alright i know i have only had it a couple of days. It has passed one drop test already and still works. So overall i would score it 7/10.

Asking about other things you got the same ansser.
At last I asked “can you tell me anything that is better
in a iPhone compared to HTC, Nokia etc

You can buy mine. A phone that you can only use in the dark is next to useless. A phone pops apart when you squeeze it in the middle is poorly made. A phone who’s operating system locks up all the time is a waste of money. A phone with an operating system designed without touch sensitivity in today’s market is 20 years behind the times. The 5800 is all of these and you are welcome to it.

iPhone is 20% better than the Nokia touch screen range, but iPhone is 2x the price! So the winner is… blackberry! haha! To each his own ;)

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

Tha was nice! But we don´t have Blackberry in Europe /Scandinavia

    John Gore Reply:

I have to say as someone who has a Blackberry, Nokia touch phones, and an iPhone 3GS, that when it comes down to it, nothing can beat the iPhone. The apps I now use on the iPhone allow me to do almost everything from the phone (budget, invoicing, email, web browsing, etc). While these things are also possible on other phones, it comes down to easy of use, speed, fun factor, etc. Its simply not as fun to do these things on any other device, and for me this means that I do almost everything on the iPhone, while the blackberry stays in my pocket, hardly used for much more than phonecalls, and the Nokia stays at home in the cupboard as a spare phone. It costs a lot, but an iPhone will change your life, and the way use a phone. :P

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

Thats nice to you! I don´t need a phone to change my life, there is substance enough already. And fun. I understand iPhone is good for app 15% of people, the one who had bought it, the rest 85% will do without - they prefere something else.
I am one of them. Now I wait for Nokia N8 with the 12mpix camera as one of the things I need in my phone. 16.000 apps are enough for me simply because they are good ones not just “apps”. And there is much more like free GPS. And of course
flash and Skype, which I also need - things Apple have not. But that is my needs.

  25. rile says:

listen iphone….you pay 100 dollars a month for apps that you can get on an ipod touch? serouosly? and also scince when did apple become so famous in making phones when nokia has more experience. and here we have VERY simular phones,, so i guess it all comes down to price…30$/month vs 100$/month and the only benifite is app store…..i know my answere.
My solution was getting a 5800 and an ipod touch. i know what youll say.. i phne is cheaper than ipod touch, wrong, pay attention to the unfair monthly plan. same goes for 3gs, theres only minor improvments but NO NEW FEATURES

  33. To even mention the Nokia 5800 in the same sentence as the sublime i-phone is sacrilege.
The Nokia 5800 is a truly shameful piece of awful crud that is both over engineered and ugly to look at. It is as if they stole every piece of i-phone tech and made a version one tenth as good - an embarrassment!.

If you want a computer and can afford a great one - buy a mac
If you want a mobile phone and can afford a great one - buy an i-phone

Its that simple, sorry folks - and all the rubbish every one spouts about Apple is boring nonsense. If every one hates Apple then why is every phone and computer developer trying in vain to copy them!

Must dash - I need to hammer some nails into a wall with the 5800.

You have not read the article?
8 clear comparisions show which one is the best.
Do you think the writer is a mad man or what?

People don´t hate Apple, why should they? They just like
Nokia better (41% smartphone marketshare, iPhone 7%).
Maybe you are the one that is lost, I really think so.

Nokia is not an Apple copy, only one (5800) is done to meet iPhone,
the rest of them are not, like the next N8.
I don´t understand you, having a phone that virtually can´t meet any of todays
requirements, still you think it is “the only one”. Love is blind.

    John Gore Reply:

haha, the age old argument is that people will defend what works for them as the “best” and “only” option out there, even when of course it is not.

“Nokia may have the market share, but Apple has mastered its share of the market.”

Ask any Nokia user what they think of their phone over all. Half of them will tell you “its just another phone”, I got it with an upgrade, etc. Most users do not install OVI store apps, or use their phone for much more than making calls and reading emails.

The iPhone is completely different, due its core design. Almost all users have downloaded apps from the AppStore, and enjoy the apps they have. They use the apps daily, and the apps have a practical use as well as being so useful and easy to use, that they are fun to use.

Not to mention all the crashing and bugs with Nokia’s. iPhone (much like mac computers) simply does not crash. This alone make the whole iPhone experience far superiour to that of any Nokia or other smartphone.

In closing, to each his own. I have tried all the options, and have a Blackberry, Nokia touch phone, and an iPhone 3GS, and I can say from experience of working in depth with each of these that the iPhone really is the best around.

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

Thats simple stupidity. There are two numbers that tells the whole story and they are 85 vs 15%. What people say is one thing, it´s how they act what counts. Nokia has had music dowloands even before somtehing existed like iPhone, so what is so special? I think there is about 50 different touchscreenphones only at the Swedish market, what is special? Nokia has even both resistive and capacitiv screens at your choise!
I am not telling you Nokia is better, I am just telling you that you don´t have a clue what you are talking about. There is nothing any Nokia smartphone can do that iPhone does, so what is your point? Well, iPhone 4 has now 2 cameras! Everyone having any other phone has used his or her for videotalking for 5 years now. Still you believe this is special för iPhone… weird

    John Gore Reply:

Jarmo, its not “special” that iPhone now has these features, it is how these features work and are presented that make them ground breaking.

I suggest you get yourself an iPhone, play with it for a bit, and then talk.

Most people used to pirate music rather than buy it in a Nokia music store. But for some reason (great design and ease of use) people that used to pirate music now rather buy it through the iTunes AppStore.

There is not need to be such a hater, just got get an iPhone, give it a try for a while, and you will see what iPhone users love their phones so much. ;)

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

I don´t hate iPhone, that should be quite obvious. I welcome new players to the market because i strongly believe in competition. My wife has Nokia-shares and I am of finnish origin - nevertheless. And I also belive people have slightly different needs why I would never tell anyone “my phone is the best”. Think about it.
“Go by yourself an iPhone…” I am not stupid, I know what I need. What about Apple-fans? Many, too many thinks that what is good for them is good for everyone, The phenomena was the same when iMac was introduced - and it will end the same way. iPhone sales are already declining (15% market share 7/31)

  41. I’ve uncovered my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic cell to become the finest general We’ve owned. Just desire it had a slide out qwerty keyboard! Anyway, it does not so ample is more than enough. A whole lot of individuals whine in regards to the camera, it does suck, but it’s not that critical to me-I possess a wonderful Canon SD950 digital camera if I want pics. I am truly please with how customizable it can be and all of the factors I can perform with it. Requirements charging practically everyday when applied a fair bit. Thinking about debranding it. Rogers (Canada) keeps things very locked down plus the highest fw I are actually ready to upgrade to is v30 (one thing like that cannot keep in mind the exact quantity in the moment). Sounds like v40 has some excellent capabilities I am missing out on.Properly, glad I found this forum, I hope to discover a bunch more about what I can perform with my phone.

    Jarmo Palomaa Reply:

Knowing the market is part of my job, I can tell:
-Ii you just want to make calls and SMS - buy a phone for that, not a smartphone!
-If you want a good camera in your phone - by a Ericsson
-If you want a lot of music and good sound - buy a Nokia Express Music - but not 5800!
-If you want the best navigation in your phone (still not as good as a GPS device) buy a Nokia
-Never buy a used phone, not any!
-If you consider a smartphone - don´t even think about iPhone!
The antenna problem is not as simple as Steve Jobs let us to think, it is fundamental.
Look att Androids and Nokia, starting with whats coming up next (do always so).
-And don´t buy Apple, Nokia, Ericsson, HTC etc because you “love” the brand, buy a PHONE
you need! And don´t forget: your phone is the best for you, not for anyone else.
There is nothing like “my phone is best” only ignorant people think that way.
And only the most stupid ones gives words to that kind of thinking.
What I have? At the moment: the cheapeast Nokia possible. With radio and loudspeaker.

Actually? which new phone doesnt try this? How bout speak about how the text rearranges itsself. Also the texting, very poor review. Why didnt you mention you can use the mic and text along with your voice? Unnoticed ALOT of different more essential features

  43. Apple has 15% marketshare (smartphone cellphones), the rest 85% are not stupid.
So how come owners of iPhone are so “convinced” their smartie is so good that they tell it to everyone and everywhere? Do they want the fight or what?

These discussions are similar to those MAc / PC once. The special thing is that people having Mac or iPhone don´t understand that because they love them other people have good reason to love something else - as the 85% have. Mostly they want a phone that meet their needs - not yours. And because of the great variaty of needs they choose something else but iPhone.

Yes, it meet your needs well, that´s why you bought it in the first place. But it does not meet the needs of the 85%. Is that hard to understand? To me it is not. My choice is Nokia N8.

  44. To avoid confusion.
Iwrote two kind of numbers iPhone 7 or 15% of global market. The first number is of course of all phones and the latter all samrtphones. iPhone sales has declined from 17 to 15 this year.
Nokia has 38,3% of total global market and 41% of smartphones. Stable.
Nokia has problems. It´s major problem is pricing, not sales. Apparenly but not necessarily the company has a defensive strategy which is lower prices to meet competition. Yes, I am a business scientist but maybe that is the reason i would not dare telling if the strategy is right or wrong, it depends on what the goals are the next few years. I cannot know, Im not in the board. The ccompany has not more money today than 12 months earlier - and not less.

Apple is something else. Puttining a phone to the market for a newcomer is a huge risktaking.
You MUST have a sales strategy that works, that is something Steve Jobs can at his fingertips.
To get attention without puttting in big money was one trick (create expectations before
sakes start, having fixed releas dates so the queus were a “must” and spectacular “shows”
in which he exited web-viewers are all part of a master salesmans work. THAT is how new
products that costs serious money to develope should be put in the market!

What happens when the sales drops (from 17 to 15% narketshare is an actual drop of 12%
lost territory for Apple). The developement costs has to be paid in a hurry, there is no risk
at all to the company but what happens to iPhone if the declining sales endure? Jobs did
really stir the market - now the “show-time” is here. Exciting times ahead.

The differences Nokia / Apple are not only in the products but in the way how they run the
business, corporate structure - everything. One may have wishes, favourites and so on but
what happens remains to see. I think we can have an idea before christmas already.
