Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Vs iPhone 3GWritten by Abdulrehman on October 20th, 2008
iPhone 3G, Apple’s most recent release of the iPhone series has met real competition recently with the new release from Nokia, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic code-named ‘Tube’. Now this is certainly not for Apple Fans because what I’m going to talk about is something that is not might not be in favor of iPhone.
Since it’s release, iPhone has created a new vision in the world of cell-phones. the whole touch system and the applications drove millions of people crazy. But now, things are a bit different. Unlike the golden times for Apple, now nokia 5800 has proved that iPhone is not the only one in the game. Probably that’s the reason I thought of writing this Nokia 5800 Vs iPhone comparison. Overall, I personally think that Nokia 5800 has been built to counter the growing influence of iPhone and also add all the features that were recommended by Apple users, which now gives them a better choice. So here is a comparison table with features that each phone either supports of does not support:

#
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Apple iPhone 3G
1
Nokia’s XpressMusic series has been widely famous for its great music quality, plus nokia has also pushed in a new online music store, plus any XpressMusicc phone comes in with a 1 year subscription to download unlimited songs (with DRM).
Apple’s online music store, iTunes has been a major player for their music advance, but their music qualities and online integration have made them really popular in terms of music.
2
This cell phone comes in with a 3.2 Mega pixels camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and dual flash, this is quite enough for just a phone.
The iPhone came in with just a 2 Megapixels camera and no Flash nor Carl Zeiss optics.
3
It claims up to 35 hours of Music, and it is overall better either for voice, data and standby (about 15 to 30% more)
It has up to 24 hours of Music, and other technical specifications regarding the Battery life are below Nokia 5800.
4
It comes with a 8GB Micro SD Card, so this is definitely better because upgrading memory would be very cheap and easy.
It comes in two forms, 8GB and 16GB internal. Although that is quite a lot but extending memory in any case is not possible.
5
It has a 3.2″ screen with a resolution of 640×360, which means a higher resolution on relatively not so big screen.
It has a 3.5″ screen with a resolution of 480 x 320, which means a small resolution on a big screen, not very impressive.
6
It does not only offer finger touch but stylus and plectrum as well which gives us more choices on the Input method.
It basically depends on personal taste as iPhone only offers finger touch as the input method.
7
Video Recording is another common feature of a Nokia mobile. In addition you can record videos with the standard Nokia application and make video calls, something not yet possible on the iPhone.
Although the iPhone is capable of playing some video formats some services have to be installed whereas they come pre-installed in nokia 5800.
8
This is the best part, an unlocked Nokia 5800 XpressMusic costs $390 only, which is quite amazing compared to the features.
Buying an iPhone involves some serious money, Since it is always bought with a contract, paying for the first month and then the cancellations fees and all, A single iPhone with all these costs included would cost you about $800, see the difference!
I think that the results are very clear leading to one result, that until iPhone makes another release with more features Nokia 5800 is to stay on top, not only because of the slick features but also because it gave birth to a whole new concept to all of the cellular companies like Nokia to keep up with the generation. So after reading the iPhone Vs Nokia 5800 comparison, you still with iPhone 3G, or have you made a little change of mind?

Nokia is better in one more way that is has a bluetooth feature inwhich we can transfer files from one phone to another and Iphone lacks that basic feature.

Yes, iPhone has over 100,000 apps now. Nokia and other smartphones have very few (under 16,000). But for those of us who don’t want or need to “play” with all those apps while out and about, there are a few select things the Nokia 5800 will do that an iPhone will not. This is absolutely true!
even though there is a skype app for regular voice calls.
The primary thing being video calls. This is the reason I have a 5800 and NOT an iPhone or other smartphone. The Nokia has a front and rear-facing camera. The majority of calls that I make from home are via Skype, are international, and are VIDEO calls. I needed a cell that could do that, and the app called Fring makes that possible. But Apple has no plans to implement front and rear-facing cameras on its iPhone any time in the near future, so video calls will NOT ever seemingly be a possibility for iPhone
Also, those video calls, since they’re over 3G, and are via Skype, don’t come out of my minutes, they come out of my data usage, which is unlimited, and is pretty sweet. I can get away with having a data plan only on my 5800 and no voice (much cheaper than the data + voice that you need for the iPhone). And, by the way, you CAN use GPS w/Nokia - in fact, it’s much better than the GPS offered for iPhone.
However, while Nokia used to be the “gold standard” of cell phones, they have gone downhill significantly in the last few years. The sound quality on most xpress music phones is grainy and generally poor. The antenna quality and reception is incredibly weak! In fact, I couldn’t get a signal within ten miles of my house when I brought my 5800, an area I had gotten full bars in with the same carrier (and a Motorola Razr) previously.
However, iPhone’s reception is notoriously just as poor! I compared it to the 5800 with NO difference - still couldn’t get reception in the same areas I got service w/my Razr. Switched back to a Motorola, and bam, five bars. ( w/AT&T the whole time).
Nokia also manufactures phones with increasingly cheap parts. I had to exchange my 5800 SIX TIMES before I got one that didn’t fall apart right out of the box or give such a grainy sound when playing music it was completely inexcusable. This was out of the box - I didn’t even have a chance to use any of these phones before something fell off of them. No, they weren’t refurbished, and no, I didn’t drop them, throw them, etc.. I looked up reviews and found that Nokia users were having the same issues worldwide - parts falling off, bad reception.
I now live in an area where reception is excellent, and I use an MP3 player separately for music, so I’m able to keep my 5800 for video skype calls, for which it is amazing.
However, if I were going to buy a smartphone and didn’t need video calling, I wouldn’t buy a Nokia 5800 OR an iPhone. The leaders in smartphone technology are Android phones, like the Motorola Droid, Samsung, HTC, the newest Nokias (N97 and N900), and the Palm Pre. Although Motorola is clearly outperforming ALL OTHERS when it comes to reception and smartphone technology, they just need to get with it and allow video calls…. as do all the rest. That’s why, until video calls become the norm, I’m stuck w/my Nokia 5800.

Nokia is going down.. People here have neither used the iPhone or Android and make claims about the potential of the 5800. Nokia makes good budget phones PERIOD!
[Reply To This Comment]
Nokia make budget phones, but in a recession isn’t that a smart thing ? The iPhone’s operating system and touch screen may be better, but Nokia makes a better, stronger, more adaptable phone that is suited to you and not those greedy CEO’s sitting in Apple’s Head Office.
The Android is an excellent OS, and probably beats both these phones, but Google’s “Nexus One” will be the true iPhone Killer.

Google Voice is a lifesaver. The functionality that it offers is amazing, like the ability to forward calls. I’ve got some invites if anyone wants any. Also I hope that Apple rethinks the Google Voice app, hwo could such an unruly app get denied by Apple?

Hey Guys and Gals I have neither of the phones, but I have worked
on both of the phones, I have worked on a N5800 and the I-ph. Personally, I
feel, I-Ph is a highly sophisticated and highly expensive phone for Indian Markets.. Where as N5800 is a perfect fit for our indian markets.. Its economical, sexy looking, sleek, and the best part is.. its not a business phone like Iph.

Well….I got nokia 5800 couple of days ago. I only want a phone as a phone to talk and not all the other gizzmo’s in addition i did not want to change my contract from the unlimited off peak and all weekend call package i’ve had for the las 4 yrs. Anyway, when i got the phone it was very light compared to my old sony eric. k810i built like a brick and incredibily robust. I was quite happy cos it is fairly easy to download music onto it. It came with 16gb micro sd memory card and not bad sounding…ok you cant expect a ‘bose’ quality of sound. The best bit was the nokia ovi suite which contained a SAT NAV package with 21 countries. It took me about the best part of 8 hours to update the software for maps and firmware and before you ask yes i was doing this on a fixed line broadband connection, although my download speed was not that great. Apparantly nokia claim it is free SAT NAV service with no charges. I have not used it as yet but it looks as though it works and has useful city maps……I’m always getting lost what a great idea !!! My word is this the end of my tom tom and all map updates are free. It has great voice command function so if you set it up right you can call all your contacts buy just presing 1 button in addition to calling up calender and creating new text messages…….its really cool. Ok i know it is based on fetaures of the iphone but i think its a good all rounder but maybe not as cosmetically as sexy in design as the iphone but i think its looks to be the best phone i have had to date…….Mmmm alright i know i have only had it a couple of days. It has passed one drop test already and still works. So overall i would score it 7/10.

[Reply To This Comment]
i have a 5800 which i purchased AFTER USING AN IPHONE and despite some people swearing that iphone’s better and all and some even offering to BEGGARS (see above) i would definitely say that 5800 is A LOT BETTER than iphone. and would anyone please clarify that if a lot of apps are available, means iphone’s better? and has that person used all the apps? and hello, ovi store has more than enough apps u will ever need. stop rooting for an expensive phone just because u laid ur hands on it. as the discussion above says, battery life, screen, camera are any day better than apple’s product and with ovi maps free for life, u don’t need any gps equipment and any expensive subscription.

iPhone is 20% better than the Nokia touch screen range, but iPhone is 2x the price! So the winner is… blackberry! haha! To each his own

listen iphone….you pay 100 dollars a month for apps that you can get on an ipod touch? serouosly? and also scince when did apple become so famous in making phones when nokia has more experience. and here we have VERY simular phones,, so i guess it all comes down to price…30$/month vs 100$/month and the only benifite is app store…..i know my answere.
My solution was getting a 5800 and an ipod touch. i know what youll say.. i phne is cheaper than ipod touch, wrong, pay attention to the unfair monthly plan. same goes for 3gs, theres only minor improvments but NO NEW FEATURES

Nokia 5800xpressmusic is a useless one with respect to network, it won’t give any maps and even easily getting web pages( I am holding 3G Prepaid BSNL General Plan ) a lousy crap mobile and excellannt? sevice provider(BSNL).

To even mention the Nokia 5800 in the same sentence as the sublime i-phone is sacrilege.
The Nokia 5800 is a truly shameful piece of awful crud that is both over engineered and ugly to look at. It is as if they stole every piece of i-phone tech and made a version one tenth as good - an embarrassment!.
If you want a computer and can afford a great one - buy a mac
If you want a mobile phone and can afford a great one - buy an i-phone
Its that simple, sorry folks - and all the rubbish every one spouts about Apple is boring nonsense. If every one hates Apple then why is every phone and computer developer trying in vain to copy them!
Must dash - I need to hammer some nails into a wall with the 5800.

I’ve uncovered my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic cell to become the finest general We’ve owned. Just desire it had a slide out qwerty keyboard! Anyway, it does not so ample is more than enough. A whole lot of individuals whine in regards to the camera, it does suck, but it’s not that critical to me-I possess a wonderful Canon SD950 digital camera if I want pics. I am truly please with how customizable it can be and all of the factors I can perform with it. Requirements charging practically everyday when applied a fair bit. Thinking about debranding it. Rogers (Canada) keeps things very locked down plus the highest fw I are actually ready to upgrade to is v30 (one thing like that cannot keep in mind the exact quantity in the moment). Sounds like v40 has some excellent capabilities I am missing out on.Properly, glad I found this forum, I hope to discover a bunch more about what I can perform with my phone.
