In the Part 1 of this series I explained how you could pick a Blogging Service, namely Blogger or WordPress. Throughout this series I will be telling you all that you need to know to make money on the Net by blogging, to those who are new, you should read all articles in this series as they can get you on the track to earn money by blogging. You can click here to subscribe to the blog by mail, so that you stay updated and do not miss anything. Now this week I’ll tell you about getting a domain, setting it up and making it fully functional.

Getting a Domain

Although you can also make use of a sub-domain but I would advise you to use a domain, by domain I do not mean getting a free .co.nr or .tk , I mean getting a paid domain. However, you must also know some things to choose a good domain which I have discussed previously in my article “7 things to keep in mind while choosing a Domain“. After you have made up your mind of the domain you want then you can check its availability. You can visit 1and1 to check the availability of a domain.

Instructions for WordPress users are on the wordpress website and you can use that to set a domain with the blog, however if you use wordpress.org then you would also need to buy hosting for your blog. As for blogger, If your domain is available then don’t waste time and just purchase it, domains like .com, .org and .net domains are available for only $6.99 per year whereas for a limited time .info domains are available for only$0.99. They accept payment through Paypal and MasterCard. You can purchase your domain at 1and1 as their service is quite good and then I’ll tell you how to set up your domain with your Blog.

Once you have purchased a domain and your account has been created at 1and1, you simply login to your account. Once you are logged in, you are at your Control Panel, once there click on domains. Now if you want your web address to have a www before it then click on New and then on Sub-domain. Now enter www in the space for sub-domain and click on ok. Now your web link has been created with a www before it. Now that you’re once again at the page which shows your domains and sub-domains, check the box next to the sub-domain you just created and click on DNS settings and then click on Edit DNS settings from the drop-down menu. Once you have opened the DNS settings of the sub-domain, there will be two radio buttons select the one which says CNAME, now you can also see the CNAME settings, in the Alias enter ghs.google.com and click ok.

Now your work at the domain is done, now come back to Blogger and view the settings of your blog, go to Publishing and Select Custom Domain. Then click on Advanced settings and then in the text box just enter the sub-domain you created, allow it up to 24 hours to get activated and then you’re done. All your pages and most importantly your blog will have the root directory as this custom sub-domain. This instruction is valid only for 1and1, if you purchase your domain from somewhere else, then you may click here to see how to set up your domain as there as different procedures for all.

The reason why I’m pressing you to get a domain is because it makes your blog stand out from millions of other blogs, your blog should have a custom domain so that the visitor feels that the Blog is worth something at least and is not the same as millions of other Blogs out there. So getting a domain for a blog is very important, if you want visitors to come back to your Blog. Make sure you subscribe to the blog by mail so that you do not miss anything on this series and stay updated. If you face any problems in this procedure, just ask, I’d be happy to help.

Hello I am just looking around many different websites that offer domain names. Well this is rediculous on how many people out there charge you for so many items that don’t need to be bought and still get the same quality as the paid for sites. I have found out that all you need to really pay out is max $10 year and no more for any product on domain names. And you can get free hosting, website design programs, free personalized emails, free blog account, and free online picture site. ALL WITH A $10 PAYMENT. So don’t waste your time on paying anymore for what you need unless you are running a huge website. And still it shouldn’t cost more than $89.00 Year. By the way if the Blog owner lets me post this I have settled down with a host. But there are other like this site here that seem real nice. But Beware the Domain BIZ is still very young and it is still got a lot of growing so get it while its young.
