What is Page Rank? Page Rank is a rank given to a website showing how important it is on the web. the rank is given on a scale of 10 and so usually most websites have a Page Rank of between 3-6, which is very good. So far the only website that I have encountered with a Page Rank of 10 is Google, I have no idea of any other such website, not even yahoo. A good page rank is a very good way of telling the importance of a website to some one especially an advertiser as that is a full-form proof. By the way, page rank is calculated by Google, making use of their algorithm the Page rank is calculated at their end. Although, nobody knows the real algorithm but some assumptions and experiments have proven things that can be useful in getting a good Page Rank. So according to Google:
How the Page Rank is Calculated?
The picture above is quite self-explanatory, and it shows how the page rank is calculated. If you notice that the yellow smiley has the highest page rank the reason being that it is linked by most while it is linking to only one red-smiley in the top right and that one link has contributed to a high page rank for the red smiley. So as you may have gotten it that Page rank is calculated with a kind of voting system, where one out-going link from a website to another one counts as a vote. However, some weight is also applied in the voting system. That is, if a website with Page Rank 6 is linking to this website, that will have more impact on this website’s Page Rank rather than a website with Page Rank 3 linking here. Finally, how to get a good Page Rank? Previously, when this blog started it had no Page Rank just like an average website. But once it was in their system and just went dead, it had a page rank of 0. So far I have only got 8 proper link-backs which I did not even work for and still managed to get a page rank of 1 in these days, so what if I worked a bit for it? Page ranks are updated every 3 months officially, whereas they are in process all the time in google’s system. First of all, you should make an aim for a page rank, I would say that a page rank between 4 – 6 would be ideal, however if you manage to get more than that, then that would be completely awesome. Now, what you have to do basically is to have as many incoming links as possible and as less outgoing links as possible, because an incoming link gives you a part of the page rank of the website you’re being linked from whereas an outgoing link just shares your current page rank with the website you’re linking to. You might want to just want to put a link to another website without sharing your Page Rank with it by putting a nofollow tag. Also once you start building links for your website just make sure you’re not building them at websites which have a Page Rank of 0, that would be of no good, and also try avoiding to start an aggressive link building campaign such as selling links and buying them as you may end up being punished by google and given a bad page rank. Just try to get a link back from as many websites with a page rank and remember, the more it is, the better it is. A link back from a Page Rank 5 maybe worth 3 link-backs from a Page Rank 4. If you have another website which has a page rank, make sure you link from it to the current website and try getting link-backs from websites which have a very high page rank like 8, although it may be based on favor but outcomes can be even more favorable. Try getting your link in some way on websites and you can be on your road to a good page rank. You can start by commenting on blogs, take this one for instance, here you can get an easy link back for becoming a regular commenter. So just commence your link-building campaign here and get started, it is all this easy. One last tip that I can offer you is that don’t get frustrated during your link-building campaign because page ranks are updated after 3 months and results may not be immediate so remain patient. While PR alone doesn’t necessarily brings in the cash, you shouldn’t underestimate the power of link building and what it can do to your blog in the long run. Great article.

“PR is useless” seems to be the catch phrase of the year. However at the very least, unfortunate or not, it is still important to potential advertisers and even potential blog buyers.

Would you rather have a high showing on Google search engine or have a high PR? One of my blog always shows up in the first pages of Google but has a PR or 0 and I’m not even trying to optimize SEO.
I would rather have high PR since that’s what advertisers are looking for.

However useless people are saying about google pagerank, it still is a factor that advertisers or programs like ReviewMe etc. look at when valuating your blog.

So are you saying that we should try to have lots and lots of incoming links, but don’t link to lots of people? So say.. have 50 incoming and like 3 out-going?
Also, I don’t care if page rank is useless or not. It would make me feel good as a novice webmaster to have a page rank of 2 or 3, because that means the world’s #1 search engine says “Hey, this website is sorta cool.” To me it’s a sort of “feel good” factor, and I can brag about it to my friends.

Thank you for your article. Very interesting. Was thinking all of our work was for naught as our posting and backlinking has not moved our page rank up at all. But, it sounds like it will take three months for it to update…Was about ready to give up on this.
Thanks again for your article. Appreciate it.

Pagerank is like your rank in the army (after you retire) in other words it is google’s respect to your site.
