direct-trafficBack in this blog’s early days, it got about 20 hits which were regarded by Google Analytics as ‘Direct Traffic’. So far, the most difficult traffic type to increase is the direct traffic but as mentioned in the previous article, it is the most reliable and dependable. Direct traffic shows sure interest into the blog, there is usually no such time as ‘no luck with social media/SERPS’.

I spent time in this, and have been successful to an extent where I feel I can tell others how I manage to get at least 80 hits a day as Direct traffic by now. It might seem a little complicated and it takes time as well.

  1. Make your blog brandable, get a custom design, buy a domain, build an impression. Do whatever it takes to make your blog different from the other blogs that your readers reads. This will probably have him coming back for more.
  2. Choose a good domain, since direct traffic is usually the traffic where visitors arrive by directly entering the URL of the blog, so let it be easy and rememberable.
  3. Encourage readers to bookmark your blog, at least a person like me who goes through his bookmarks every now and then will be sure to drop by.
  4. Make sure your blog is updated at least once a week, who’s like to see the same thing for a whole month?
  5. Tell others about your website, online and offline. This is so effective that you’ll never realize it when you see a spike in your direct traffic.

Like a pile of dirty clothes, direct traffic is cumulative and is more likely to increase than to decrease unless you change your blogging ways. Moreover, point number 5 is pretty common and may have certain viral effects. For example: You tell A, A tells B and C, they tell others and so on. Implement these 5 things and hopefully your blog will pick up direct traffic in the long run.

Bookmarking is a key component. With the bookmark bar, delicious, and other tools, fewer and fewer readers are typing in the address. RSS is a key too. People are going to click on the RSS just to get that number off the bar. That means they are at least thinking about your site. Takes time to build a loyal base though.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’d commented a lot about this in the other topic and you did some good follow-up on it here. It’s crucial to get strong branding and to have a domain that’s easily memorable. Also, the regular updates are important as it gets people needing to regularly check back. Thanks for the tips!

    My next task:

Buying a domain and domain space… And I agree with this point because one can have more control over the site and with more control comes better management which corresponds to a better overall site :)

    good post :)

In that case, you can work on a sub-domain. A private domain just makes you more believable and impressive. If you’re using blogger, you can just buy a domain for $10 and keep it hosted on blogger!

I think good content, updated frequently, is vital. Domain name choice is important too.

I have to say, we’ve seen a recent spike in our direct traffic, and even though I wish I could pinpoint exactly what has led to it, it is gratifying to see that traffic come in. It’s good traffic, and hopefully it means our viral and word-of-mouth efforts are paying off.
