The Worst Computer Virus Attack

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

What I recently experienced on my computer was a proper computer virus attack. Despite the fact that I was the one who got its base of 500 MB on my computer, but little had I known something like this could happen. If you’re Torrent addicted like me, then I can only say one thing better be very very careful while choosing a torrent to download and when someone says something like it is unreliable and the torrent gets deleted from the database, then they really mean it. I thought they were just saying that because of copyright claims.

What happened to my computer could be expected if I had known that the whole thing was a big fat virus. I searched up a torrent for one of the soviftwares I wanted really bad. A very recent torrent with a lot of seeders, just what I was looking for and it was approximately 570 MB. Once it was downloaded, I didn’t get the time to install it instantly so after 2 days, I went back to it’s torrent page to look for it’s key and the torrent website displayed “Torrent deleted”, I thought that was because of copyright problems and continued to the setup.

Worst Computer Virus AttackI had recently deleted the Trial version of Anti-virus guard from my computer and now tried to install kaspersky which was giving me key problems, so I was unprotected in terms of an anti-virus. As I tried to install the software I had downloaded, I got an error. I felt a bit fishy about that but then I saw a folder which said setup, I double-clicked that and there was this file of about 40 MB which said setup and looked just like it, I opened it and nothing happened. Acting impatient as I am, I tried to open it again and then I saw this Command Prompt window which said ‘Copying file 1 of 1′. I closed the window and saw all of my desktop files being deleted and new files being added to the desktop. I tried to open Task Manager, but it said “Task Manager has been disabled by the administrator”. Although I am the administrator on the computer. I felt freaky about that, but now there was no way to get to My Computer and once I got there, Drive C and D were hidden.

So overall, Task manager was disabled. Desktop was deleted, drives were hidden as well as My computer. Browsing could not be done, and there was kind of a complete ban on downloading. There was no way to open Run or to Log off. The computer wasn’t detecting a USB either. The wallpaper was changed to an image which said ‘Your privacy is in Danger’. Out of nowhere this website was popping in and out asking me to download their anti-virus, when I tried to do that my computer restarted automatically. Its base file were write-protected by now.

It was more like a free country being taken over by a whole army of outlaws and goon masterminds. Some knowledge that I had of these things of an operating system, I managed to enable the task manager in the safe mode using group policy. But that was it, I knew nothing more about it, I couldn’t get an anti-virus without which there was no way to get the virus out, I was just left to one choice. Format the whole computer and say good-bye to all the good stuff I had in there.

I lost all of the important things on my computer, and learned a lesson for once. Never download a bad torrent. But how do you know if it is a bad torrent? Now you can check my post about finding the best torrent although the points below are important:

  1. Only download torrents which are at least 1-2 days old.
  2. Read their comments and take them seriously.
  3. Make sure you have a good anti-virus
  4. If you feel fishy about the whole thing , then ask an expert before proceeding on the whole thing.
  5. Viruses are usually in the disguise in torrents of softwares.

Chrome the Google Browser - Ready for the Web?

Monday, September 8th, 2008

The beta version of Google’s new browser ‘Chrome’ was released on 2 September, 2008 for Windows in more than 100 countries. Well why Google launched the Browser? This is what their blog has to say about it:

“Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web.”

Well I see it is pretty much making sense, previously google was supporting Firefox as the browser to use, but now they have different views with their own browser in the spot light now. But still as Firefox supporters they did not want to outshare it’s market, so they made chrome open-source for others browsers to keep up. I had no intentions of downloading Chrome in any way but I messed up with my computer and unfortunately had to format it and set up the computer all over again. Downloading the important softwares for my computer, I was about to search Download firefox on Google when I saw this link which said Try Google’s new Browser. I thought of gving it a try and after a few minutes the Google browser was all over my computer. The only thing I have liked about it so far is that it helps give me a clear view of the website I’m viewing as it is not very crowded with all the bars at top and I really feel like I am at a website. Here is what this blog looks like in the browser:

However, that is the only thing which I have liked about it so far and that is also possible in other browsers if I close all the bars. So now what’s the difference? I have a really slow processor and a very less RAM for my computer which means it cannot afford programs jacking up a lot of memory for nothing. Well what I have noticed is that this browser takes screenshots of the websites you visit which freezes up my computer. Although this is something that I have just noticed on Chrome’s default landing page, screenshots of most of the websites I visited recently. But something I liked about it is that if one website crashes the browser, it will not crash the whole window, just the concerned tab which makes it pretty sweet. This also affects the security features as each browser tab is isloated into its own domain which means that a web-based attack will have a harder time taking over the computer.

Since the browser is still in its beta phase so I will not have much to say about it although I would say that their future plans are great. They have a built a new JavaScript engine called V8, which is good enough to power the next generation of web applications which are not possible in browsers today. According to Larry Page the co-founder of Google, one of the main aims of Chrome is to make it work faster on old, slow computers which is the main problem on the internet today. Its working pretty good for me so far, and the start-up loading time is very low compared to firefox, but at the moment I still think that firefox is better than chrome, although future updates to Chrome will out-run this statement.

Bull or Reality? - You decide

Everybody gets strange emails, telling stranger things. But recently one e-mail that has been out a lot has grabbed the attention of many, accompanied by press attention as well. According to the mail a few weeks ago, a young man was recharging his cell phone at home. Just then a call came in and he tried to answer, still connected to the outlet. After a few seconds something wrong happened in the charger, and a high surge of electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room and found him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers, and he died on his way to the hospital.

The e-mail came accompanied with the picture above. The obvious moral of the whole thing is that we should not use or attend a call when the cell phone is charging. However, factually this is false. The charger has a voltage of 5 Volts which is not even enough to make a person unconscious. However, it is also true that a cell phone may explode or cause sparks and burn when over-charged or in some uncertain circumstances. It is best that we remain alert about these things and in this case, not use a cell phone while it is charging. There have been 4 reports of people injured or hurt due to cell phone explosions in the past few years.

Be aware of what you’re carrying in your pocket, it could be a dynamite. So what do you think could this cell phone explosion really kill a person?
