Alexa Widget does not help Alexa Ranking - ProvenWritten by Abdulrehman on November 28th, 2008
By saying this I prove all those people wrong who say that putting the widget does improve your ranking. I am not saying this on estimation basis, but I’m going to prove it right here. As you may have noticed a few days ago I installed alexa widget and I did see a spike in my alexa graph, however that was the actual number of users with alexa toolbar that visited my website. To prove my point, I checked the code of the alexa widget which is a script pointing to a .js script. Curiously, I opened it and to my surprise found nothing but three functions, namely: AlexaSiteStatsWidget (For getting the code of the widget) , getFullURL(For getting the webite’s URL) and encode64(For putting both onto the page).

Now, if this really does improve Alexa ranking then there should be some script in it which tracks a user as well as his country, etc. Nothing like this was present here and hence it is proved that putting the alexa widget on the website is of little no use. Although you may put it on for showing off your site rank. Are you still having the Alexa Widget at your blog and if no then what what do you think about this? Even famous bloggers like Yaro Starak beleived in this!

I am Abdulrehman Agha, the guy behind 3arn.Net. I am 16 years old, study in grade 10 and live in Pakistan. I started this blog in the hope of making money on the internet, sharing my computer experiences and proving that despite many barriers, one can make money on the internet.

I agree. Infact I think Alexa stats are inaccurate 90% of time. The reason for saying this is that when ever a get a high volume of traffic on a particlur day, Alexa’s results are opposite of my stats. Nonetheless, most of the people still rely on these stats when they want to advertise or for any other reason.
Thats why I prefer compete stats over Alexas’

The Alexa widget doesn’t help improve rankings…. not at all. It’s calculated by the people who have the toolbar installed.

I guess I’m missing something. I don’t understand how the Alexa widget is supposed to improve you blog in the first place.

You have proven the internet myth that the alexa widget improves your alexa ranking. There are so many of these type of myths that it’s good you uncovered this one.

Awesome post!
Would have been a smart move on Alexa’s part to make this so. However, I’m glad to see this myth cleaned up.

This was a myth that was clung to after the alexa’s redirect url was taken offline.
I’ve noticed that since I’ve been attracting more local traffic and traffic who use Vista, my ranking has dropped. They don’t have an ALexa toolbar for Vista. You have to use firefox and some plugin.

Definitely.. Whats more important is getting people with alexa toolbar to visit your site..

Was there really a tool to improve Alexa Rank in a fast way? I think we are trying to bring as many visitors to our blog and consequently our traffic rank will improve regardless you are using the widget or not.

Is alexa such a useless tool!!

Good to know, i’ve wondered about this, but only a little bit, because like alot of people I feel that alexa ranking is pretty unaccurate/useless. Pretty much its only a statistic of how many people who want their sites to rank high on alexa visit your site. Which when considering that probably 95% or more of internet users dont know what alexa is doesnt exactly make it the holy grail of success. I didnt even know what it was until i was blogging for a month or two.
Still, it would be nice to say I’m in the top 100,000.

IMO Alexa uses API from Google Analytics etc etc..

It is obvious that with every passing day the credibility of Alexa is only increasing and getting stronger. The mammoth number of users that is always increasing and the tough competition to the top is testimonial to this fact.

While I don’t doubt what you’re saying is correct (and I’d venture to tell people to avoid bullshit like Alexa and Page Ranks all together, because they’re not an accurate measure of a site’s value), I’m curious as to how you “proved” it doesn’t track these things. What browser you use, what operating system you use, your geographic location, and how many times you’ve been to the site - all of these things can be trivially tracked just by you loading an image from a remote server. The fact there’s no obvious javascript to track this information doesn’t mean that it’s not done.

Alexa is a very important benchmark to determine the rankings and traffic of sites. Google is placed at the 2nd position as per Alexa rankings and traffic rankings and is facing tough competition from Live.com and of course Yahoo.

Alexa rankings, Google rankings all can be “played with” or altered based on how well you can build your site to be Search Engine Optimized. If a web site sells antique brass it makes no sense for them to become an expert on optimizing their site, they should be ranked on their expertise of antique brass. It makes no sense to polish and shine the brass to be other than antique just so a search engine will rank it artificially higher. The search is wrongly skewed to those who know SEO rather than those who know their product. When will they rank a site based on the content alone?

I know we’re drifting away from the original subject a bit, but if there was a case like yours, as in Copyright protection cases, the Plagiarist would be caught based on the duplicate entry dated after the original. Legal action could be pursued and verified by dates of uploads. The Plagiarist would be fined, forced to remove the copied material and their clients would be alerted that they are just copy cats. Now, if they have a lower price for an item, and that is what is searched for. Google knows that $5 is less than $7, they should be listed first if a request was made for list lower to higher. Law is there for those who can afford it, just like SEO.

In the face of the tough competition, Alexa is coming up with more and more user friendly and unique features. Ability to create own search engine by giving access to the crawler is quite a novel feature in itself.
